METAL MANIA has gripped the S t o ck Exchange this week. It has been all gbld or

silver or nickel. Gold is the oil which

lubricates the machinery of world trade. I t has been fixed in price at 35 dollars an ounce since

1934. Everything else has gone up

since then, so the pundits expect it to double in value. Silver is used in photo

graphy. A year ago the O.S. Treasury stopped selling it at a Axed price. Since then the price has doubled. Now it is a commodity like

On the nickel front the

shook has been the setback in Western Mining, the Australian stock which I backed all the way up from £1 to £25. The shares were split recently and started off in their new ” mini-size” at

86s. This week they slipped as

low as 66s. I t certainly is nerve-

wracking being a mining share investor — a quarter of your capital up the spout in a week. Nevertheless, my message is grin and buy.

Western Mining is the nickel share of all time. Out in Rhodesia they also

have a massive nickel dis covery — at Botswana. Roan Selection Trust struck it rich here a year ago after eight years p r o s p e c t i n g . But because they have big interests in Zambia they have not so far dared to develop this new wealth. mNow Mr Smith and Ills
