I WASN’T REALLY

NERVOUS- After one or two set

backs I have joined the much maligjied army o women drivers, as yet only

a s a learner. The set-backs were only

minor. 1X16 driving instruc tor had to postpone my first lesson a couple of times because of unavoidable things

like Ws car breaking down. Of course my male collea

gues were quick to assure me that was merely an excuse and that the instructor was putting off as long as poss ible the ordeal of teaching me the rudiments of driving.

Smoothly However, last Saturday I

finally found myself sitting very nervously behind the wheel of what seemed an

enormous car. It all went very smoothly

except for forgetting which way the indicator went or to press the clutch before I

stopped. When we reached Hurst

Green my instructor still looked remarkably unruf fled so I relaxed a bit more and we sailed through the stone gateway into Stony-

hurst College. I t was coincidence I'm sure

that as we neared the college itself, the rugger match that had been in progress nearby suddenly finished and the

boys ali disappeared. We reached home unsca

thed and the instructor wen asked me when I wanted another lesson so maybe things didn’t go too badly

after all. My next problem is talking

people into taking me out practising. The boyfriend says his car

is only insured for himself and his father, W father says the gearbox in his car needs a t t e n t io n and I

wouldn’t be able to work it properly and my sister says she'll take me out driving when I've had a few more lessons. So what can I do?
