CLITHEROE ADVERTISER AND TIMES
M o t h e r a n d B a b y C o m p e t i t i o n
The lirst-cver mother
and baby contest run by the Advertiser and Times is now under way. Already this week, a
photographer has been busy at our King Street offices, taking pictures of mothers and their babies for entry in the competi tion.
He will be there again
this afternoon, between 2-15 and 4 p.m., and to morrow, Saturday, at the same times. And entry is absolutely
free. There’ll be a free copy of the p i c t u r e for each mother, too.
Equally
important This is not merely a
baby contest, for the mother is equally impor tant as the child. There’s a cash award of
£15 for the first. £10 for the second, and £5 for the third mo s t attractive mother and baby. From the pictures taken
by our photographer. 40 will be selected for publi cation in the paper, during the next four weeks. From these, a short list
of six will be chosen to attend the Grand Final and Fashion Show at the Civic Hall during the Castle Fete Week.
Only 10
minutes The final is being run
in conjunction with the Castle Fete Committee. So far as the competitors
arc concerned, the contest will take only about 10

minutes of a mother's time.
All she has to do is to
bring her child to our offices where her name, address, child’s name and age, will be noted and their photograph taken.
When you come to be photographed, here’s a
lip: Don't fuss over your baby and try to make him or her, smile.
Look at the camera
yourself, for the photo grapher will take the pic ture when everything is in order.
Many mothers try to make the baby smile with
the result that their own faces comes out in profile.
But in this contest, the mother counts as much as the baby.

when we say we want the picture which has a special q u a l i t y . . . an affinity p e r h a p s , between the mother and her child.
Chance of winning
Fathers might, in fact, understand this better than the mothers, for we all know how members of a family can seize on a pic ture of mum and the baby, even if the mother herself
-loes not like it. Incidentally, this contest
is being run in Clitheroe alone. Entrants will be competing only against other mothers in the Clith eroe district and not against anyone from wider area.
We take all the pictures
ourselves, rather than accept photographs sub mitted by the entrants to ensure that the competition is fair and everyone has the same chance of win ning.
In this way, we make
certain that those who could afford expensive portrait photography have no advantage over other mothers.
