Omissions to shame
ought some
consciences -MR. S. BLACKBURN
MR. SYDNEY BLACKBURN, the Liberal candidate in the by-election next week, told the Advertiser'and Times: *T have once again accepted the invitation of the Liberal Association to contest the forthcoming by-election mainly because I think it is high time we had individual thought and action on the local council. Wc ought to get away from the “ toeing-the-line” attitude.” “With the exception of two
short spells during the 27 years since the end of the war, wc have had in Clith- eroe a Tory-controlled coun
cil, and what have wc to show for twenty-odd years of
Conservative rule? “I have searched hard for an
answer to this question and what have I found? “Firstly, we have a beautiful cemetery in Waddington Road,
which is a credit to the town.' Then we have houses and old folk’s bungalows, but not nearly enough for our urgent needs.
A disgrace “Many of the houses have
been neglected and are a dis grace to the town. Many of the old folk’s bungalows have gar dens much too big for the pen sioner to tend and are sub sequently badly overgrown. They spoil what would other wise be an attractive estate. “These two things appear to
modernised, fifteen years too late, at an extra cost of about £20,000. The destructor plant is being enlarged, again years too late, at a much higher cost. And of course, we all know about the King - Lane Hall, against whose acquisition for the town the present Conserva tive candidate fought so hard and, unfortunately, so success
be the only tilings we have to show. The many things still needed but not there are omissions that should shame the consciences ot many of the present councillors. “The sewage works are being
fully. Still £ar away
ago that Clitheroe council began discussion . - swimming baths and, by the reading i last week’s ^Advertiser and Times, we are as near, having them now as we were 50 years
“It must be at least GO years
ago. “Are we satisfied with this
short-sighted Tory record? On Thursday next you will be going to the polls; not to elect a cab inet, not to elect a Prime Mini ster, not to elect the government of the day; you will be going to elect your representative to the local council, your rep resentative to look after your own personal interests and the wise spending of your money.
sincerely hope you will, remem ber you have only one vote at this election. Make sure you use it for the progress of Clith eroe.”
“When you go to vote, and 1
