ORGAN MUSIC TO SUIT ALL TASTES

was the organist invited by the Clitheroe Parish Church Organ Society to take the place oli Dr. George Thal- ben-Ball, who is recovering from an operation. He has been before some eighteen months ago and gave a mag nificent programme. For his second visit his programme was brilliantly played and what an attractive pro gramme it was, with some thing to suit all tastes. Mr. Robinson began with the

temperature a t which the in strument was tuned, and every thing combined with Mr. Robinson’s mastery to produce most perfect performance.

Bach Fantas ia and Fugue in G Minor, a most well thought- out performance with some trills which seemed to l it like a glove and all magnificently under control throughout. Two quiet Chorale-Preludes

by The Belgian Organist Com poser Flor Peeters came next and were most musically h an dled. These were followed by the Mendelssohn Organ Sonata No: 3 in A minor, a work of considerable technical diffi culty b ut there was no trace of 'this in its performance, ra th e r one was made aware of the onward sweep of the music, with the chorale theme appearing in tile bass under

Dr. George Thaiben-Ball was to have played this great Liszt composition, he would probably have equalled Mr. Robinson's performance, for h is technique is world-famous, he would probably have treated i t differently, a s is likely to happen when two a r tists inter p ret tile same music, he would probably have chosen his stops differently, but even he could not have given a bet te r performance, though l t might well have been, a dif ferent one. I t is to be hoped th a t when he comes, he will play th is work for Olitheroe Organ Society members so th a t they can compare two treatments of th is master

piece. Mr. Robinson was introduced

by Mr. C h a r l e s Myers (Organist of the Church and

Society), he was thanked by Mr. D. R. Carrington. In res ponse to tlie vote of thanks, and tlie now traditional re quest for an encore he played a delightful little piece by the British composer F rank Bridge, again most tastefully regis tered, and musically played.

The recital nc month is a

retu rn visit by the local 'cellist Mr. John Catlow, now a mem ber or th e London Symphony Orchestra, who is to play the Dvorak 'Cello Concerto, with Mr. Myers to accompany at the organ and also to play some solos.

One of th e crucial figures in th a t environ ment is the fa th e r — a man whose coarseness and brutality are reflected in h is language.
