Waterloo Road Factory

Waterloo Road Factory was the first Trutex factory in

Clitlieroe but this does not mean that it isn’t up-to-date or modern. It has a modern decor, the most modern machinery, and specialises

in the very fashionable side of girls’ sclioolwear. For school leavers wanting a-rewarding jol>, special training

Special training is given to school leavers, and this is given . .

under expert supervision and on the most modern machinery. At Henthorn, Rave Shirts are manufactured, and this is also

a lar"e nylon section. There will he a considerable increase in sales of these products in 1967 and experienced machinists who would like to do sectional work are also required.

For them there is no turn-

no good saying, “I can. do this job all right.” Before making the final choice you must take a critical look at yourself—as any employer would before accepting you.

LOCAL PROSPECTS The young people of this

area need look no further than their own locality for a suitable job . . . at least at the start oE their careers. The so-called drift to the South should soon be halted-by the realisation that opportunities in Lancashire’s industry and commerce, together with its further education facilities, are equal to those anywhere

in the country. There is an exciting

variety of careers from

which to choose. Girls who at one time had

to get jobs wherever they could, have unlimited oppor tunities for choosing a worth while job, even iE they possess no G.C.E. qualifica tions. Good wage packets and modern working conditions are theirs for the asking in many industries where full training is given to beginners. Clitheroe is gaining a wide

reputation for the ^ sewing section oE the textile industry and girls with a flair for mak ing clothes can find employ- ment in one of several fac tories offering top wages, good prospects of promotion, modern surroundings, a cheerful atmosphere and many additional benefits. Mills in the district are

also offering training and attractive wages to school- leavers who want to enter the old but resvarding trades such as weaving and overlooking. To many/mill work sounds old-fashioned and mundane, but most mills have been modernised and the work is

varied and interesting. Shops and offices offer

vacancies mainly to girls. Hairdressing is the career

chosen by many young ladies leaving-school, for in Clitheroe there are many up- to-date salons of excellent reputation.

ENGINEERING As for careers for boys,

more and more electrical engineering apprenticeships

are being offered, and at mid summer in Clitheroe and the nearby industrial

engineering firms offer jobs for boys, who receive full training and eventually become qualified engineers. A group training scheme

t o wn s

is offered to engineering apprentices in Accrington, Clitheroe, Great Harwood and Rishton, whereby those working for small firms are sent to Accring ton College of Further Education for a 12-month training course, so that they get the same training as they would in a large

firm. A firm offering attractive

employment to boys and girls is Trutex, where there are openings- for skilled or ' un skilled workers, from sec retaries and designers to packers and cleaners. There are seven Trutex

factories altogether. At the Waterloo Road factory machinists produce all girls’ school dresses, shorts, cellular blouses and special school blouses. “Rave” shirts and collar interfinings are manu factured at Henthorn, and at West Bradford goods from all the factories are packed and dispached. At a Black burn factory overalls and blouses are made. One of the most worth while careers—hospital work

—appeals to many girls and boys, and hospitals in this area have vacancies for student and pupil nurses. In any one year at the

Blackburn hospitals alone there is an intake of 80 to 100 student nurses and 40

to 50 pupil nurses. For school-leavers who

wish to see the world there are numerous openings for them in the Forces or even in the overseas offices of a British-based firm.

FARMING Clitheroe is particularly

known as an agricultural town and naturally there are many jobs in gardening and farming available to boys. Some girls, too, can enter

interesting and remunerative job and also offers a com- - Iprehensive training. .
