M r . H a r r ison , o f Montagu e Street, Clitheroe, m u s t be one o f the few men in E n g ­ land who hav e k ep t a pre­ war c a r since new. The Austin 10 is .still running well on (he sam e engine.

T h e se were not easy miles, for Mr . H a rrison used the car extensively in his work a s an agent fo r the R e fu g e A s su r ­ ance Company. H e ‘covered’ every v i llag e b e t w e e n Clitheroe and Hellifield and had to travel many mHes of rough fa rm track s .

not-too-excessive oil con­ sumption is in perfect order. A fter ‘ tickling’ the fuel pump it s ta r t s first time and b rak e s , lighting and steering a re a l l immacula te.


T h e c a r returns 38 m pg—a figure o f which owners of more m o d em vehicles might well b e envious, and the cellulose — renewed only once in 30 years—glvstcus like new.


Mr. H a rrison, who is 7 9 , still uses the Austin quite a lot a t weekends, although be hates the sp eed and la ck of courtesy o f tod ay’ s traffic.


His hobby, a p a r t from looldng a f te r the c a r , is fly tying. In his younger d ays he tied artificial flies fo r a prince and was a keen fly fisher­ man. T o d a y his nimble fingers still m ake a first-rate hire-
