A total o f nearly 100 oldster roadsters wi l l converge on
his toric Ho g h to n Towe r for the start of the gruel l ing 57-mi le haul to Cl itheroe Castle.
Al l w'eek, veteran and vintage car enthusiasts— many of
them past compet i tors in the famed London— Brighton and THIS IS THE
Manches ter— Blackpool runs — have been making the final preparations. They' l l have spent hours
giving engines a comprehen sive overhaul and check, touching up the body-work and giving the cars a thorough cleaning and pol ishing.

vehicles is going to be a major headache. In last year's Cast le Run
there were some 40 entrants — but
its populari ty has
spread so fast that the num ber o f cars this year has soared to near the 100 mark. Bu t , lu ckily, marshalls
and organisers will be able to use the w hole o f H o gh ton Tower's mile - lon g driveway and the court
yard. Marshal l ing starts at 10-30
a.m. and R A C officials work ing from a mobi le control office in the grounds— there wi l l be a s imi lar set-up at Cl itheroe— will give each car a stringent test. They will be looking at
brakes, lights, steering and tyres— and if there are any defects, points will be knocked off the compet itor's “clean sheet” total. Marks wi l l also be deducted if the vehicle is not taxed.
