CHATBURN SMASH BA SHALL EAVES’ GOOD RECORD

100 PER CENT, record crashed in (he Clitheroe Amateur League on Saturday. Bashall Eaves, previously unbeaten

in six games, crashed at Chatbum and the home side continued their quest for championship honours. The top club, Calderstones, however, also won and are

still two points clear of Chatbum, who have a game in hand. Gisburn, owing to Craven

Cup commitments, did not have a match on Saturday, and are now four points behind Calderstones in third place.

Malcolm McLean, Chatbum

inside-right, was again the lead ing figure in his side’s victory. He crashed in a first-half hat- trick to bring his total for the season to 27.

Without centre-forward Mal

colm Robinson, who was being married, and wing-half Geoff. O'Connell, injured in last week’s game with Chipping, Bashall Eaves could not find power enough to continue

t h e i r

unbeaten run. Calderstones did not find it

plain sailing at Dick Field. They received a fright when Low Moor hit two goals in the first half in which they enjoyed the run of the ball. But the hospital side came

out in fighting mood for the second half and slammed five goals into the Low Moor net. Brian Wilson and Raymond Dust both scored two and there

was an own goal. Gisburn rvere knocked out of

the Craven Cup competition by Carleton at the Commercial

Ground. Oarleton were reduced to ten

men early in the game but their two first-half goals were enough to see them through to the semi final.

The games between St. Paul’s

and Trinity at Henthorn Field and Chipping and Waddington at Chipping were postponed because of icy grounds.

It seems unlikely that there

will be any upset at the top of the league tomorrow.

Calderstones, at home to lowly

Trinity, should keep their lead in the championship race while Chatbum’s power should tell at

Twitter Lane. Gisburn have no match, while

Bashall Eaves should make up for Saturday’s lapse when they play St. Paul's at Henthorn Field. The match at Dick Field

between Low Moor and Chipping could provide a close struggle.

McLEAN AGAIN

ON THE TARGET

CHATBURN 4; BASHALL EAVES 2.

]\XALCOLM McLean, Chat- 1»J- burn’s goal-hungry inside- right netted another hat-trick, bringing his goal tally so far this season to 27 and helpng Chatburn to sm a s h Bashall Eaves’ 100 per cent record.

without

Bashall Eaves took the field r e g u l a r wing-half

O'Connell and centre - forward Robinson and found Chatburn a little too good for them.

A strong Chatburn defence

held the re-shuffled Bashall Eaves' attack and the home attack with McLean as the spear head won-led the visitors rear

guard. But Bashall Eaves were first

to have the ball in the net, Jones snapping In a shot which Johnson could only push against the foot of a post.

Following a miskick by a

Bashall Eaves’ defender, how ever, McLean ran through to lob the ball over Bennett and bring the scores level.

Soon Chatburn were in the

lead. Greenwood headed a cor ner down for MoLean to fire home from a melee.

McLoan completed a first-half “ hat-trick”, osating Bennett

from close range. Play swung from end to end

after the interval with both 'sides forcing several corners.

When McLean was brought

down in the area, Greenwood converted from the penalty spot to increase chatburn’s lead.

Bashall Eaves tried hard to

reduced the arrears and were rewarded when a shot went in off Chatburn right-half Simp son leaving Johnson stranded. Encouraged by this goal, the

visitors redoubled their efforts and Play became harder and tempers frayed. But once the referee had calmed down the the players, the football resumed high standards.

Accrington Combination Div. 1 Fairfield Utd. v. Clitheroe Res.

THIRTEEN LUCKY

NUMBER READ UNITED'S 13th game of the season was lucky for

them. They put on their best display of the season against a team who are only one point behind the league leaders and brought to an end a series of eleven games without a win.

On the frozen ground both

teams had difficulty with ball control. The village side went ahead

after 15 minutes when Derek Riley scored from close range.

The Burnley side pressed

United hack on defence for a spell hut could not crack the Read defence although a fierce drive from Duffy rattled the Read crossbar.

Despite increased Burnley

pressure after the interval, Read stayed cool and took then opportunities to increase their lead to three goals, Bell and

Riley scoring. Read showed excellent cohesion

and deserved their win against a highly-placed side.

They had a narrow escape late

in the game, however, when Worslev, attempting to clear hit the bail against the foot or his own goalpost.

LOW MOOR 2; I EAGUE- LEADERS Calder- ■ the foot of Bowland Billiards

League at the half-way stage, collected 19 points from then- last two games and are now in second place behind Tosside B. Results:

i J stones had a fright at Dick Field In a game in which the bounce of the ball caused many defensive errors, Low Moor hit two goals in the first half and seemed likely to cause an upset. But Calderstones stormed hack

in the second half to crash in five goals and emphasise that they still rule the roost in the

league. Low Moor took the lead m the . ,

20th minute when inside-left Pemberton completed a four-

man move. Then left - winger Dr i v e r

pounced on to a defensive mis

take to hit the second. Five minutes after the- interval

Calderstones centre-forward Wil son began the hospital sides revival and then two minutes later brought the scores level. Inside-left Dust put Calder-

xtones in the lead in the 58th minute and then Low Moor right-back Manning was unfor tunate to turn the ball into his own net after a shot from Wil

son had hit the bar. The hospital side went “nap

ill the 70th minute through

another goal by Dust. The fast moving game was

made entertaining by the efforts of both sides to play good foot ball in icy conditions.

Teams: Low Moor: Scott; Mannmg.

Bolton; Rigg, Procter, Blair; Duckworth, Beard, Hargreaves,

Pemberton, Driver. Calderstones: Purber; Bibbv,

Edwardson; Curley, Pilkington, Barrett: Owen, Brooks, Wilson, Dust, Masters.

Clitheroe Reserve went down

6-0 to English Electric “A” at Clayton on Saturday. The score sheet was blank at half-time, but the Clitheroe side, who had been reduced to ten men. were overrun in the second period.

GISBURN OUT OF CUP

GISBURN 0, CARLETON 2 1JLAY1NG with only ten men

J- for most of the game, Carle ton had the measure of Gisburn at the Commercial Ground and won through to the semi-final ot the Craven Cup competition.

The West Riding Amateur

League side adapted their style to the hard and slippery ground conditions better than Gisburn.

Inside-left Scothern hit the

first goal after 15 minutes and centre - forward Palamountain scored the second ten minutes

later. Gisburn played better in the

second half but could make no impression on the solid Carleton defence, with Snary strong at

centre-half. The game on the whole was

fast and clean but only Dennett, who pulled off several fine saves, saved Gisburn from a much heavier defeat.

Teams: Gisburn: Dennett: Geldard,

Dixon; Embrey, Wilson, Hux- table; Ho d g s o n , Woodworth, Parker, Marsden, Southward

Carleton: Cunven; Jolliff, Mc-

CHORLEY SNAP TOO MUCH FOR CLITHEROE

PLA YIN G powerhouse football, Chorley were far too good for Clitheroe at Bridge on Saturday and progressed to the

second round of the Lancashire Junior Cup with a 2-0 win. From tile start the visitors made it quite clear that they were not going to be beaten three times by Clitheroe this season,

as they were last term. Last week Clitheroe promised much with a grand exhibition

of football which gained them their first win for three months. But Saturday’s game was a different story.

The first hallf was little

mere than a siege of the Clitheroe goal with the arnber- shirted Chorley players buz zing r o u n d the Clitheroe penalty a r e a like wasps round a jam-pot.

Chorley created enough chan

ces to have established a big lead by the interval.

Poor finishing, some uncanny

anticipation by Lindsay Wallaoc and intervening heads and legs wero all that stood between Chorley and a bag-full of goals.

Try as they might, Clitheroe

could not put an end to a cease less wave of Chorley ''attacks inspired by the long passes of full-backs Griffith and Edisbury driven into the heart of the Clitheroe defence and picked up by a set of energetic forwards.

The only goal of the first-

half was certainly not in keeping with Chorley's high - powered football, for it was a scrambled affair.

Left-winger Shaw swung a

cross for Rowley on the opposite wing to shoot low for the bottom corner.

The shot disappeared in a

finny of legs from which Wroth emerged to backheel the ball in.

This goal took 35 minutes to

score and Chorley were soon after the second.

Thev would have had a clear-

cut lead by half-time but for two amazing ’’ let-offs ’’ just before the interval.

Derek Heyes headed a shot

from Ro\vley off the line and Wroth, from point-blank range was foiled by Wallace's out-flung

leg. At the start of the second

half Clitheroe began to play much mere lively football and for a .spell they pushed Chorley

back on the defence. Tom Pinder outjumped the

whole Chorley defence to reach a corner - kick from Gordon Brown. The header seemed cer tain lo score but a desperate lunge by a Chorley defender standing on the goal-line turned

the ball wide. Then Pinder hit a beautiful

free-kick from 40-yards which flashed inches wide of the Chor

ley goal. But on the whole the ball was

still running Chorley’s way and the big-kicking of Chorley defen ders often caught the Clitheroe defence at a disadvantage on the

icy siu'face. It was in the closing minutes that Chorley snatched the final

goal. Centre-half Farrington, who

had gone on to the right wing after being injured, took a Hob son pass and belted in a shot which found the bottom corner

of the net. When Chorley and Clitheroe

meet there is usually plenty of needle in the game but Satur day’s match passed almost with

out incident. The only happening of an un

pleasant nature came in the later stages of the game when Wroth and Wallace clashed following a charge by Wroth on the goal keeper. This resulted in Wroth having his name taken. Earlier Brian Parkinson was

“ booked ’’ for a foul on Hobson and Chorley right-back Griffith had his name taken in the first

half. On the whole Mr. Haslam

handled the game very well mak ing allowances for the treach erous conditions underfoot.

Teams Clitheroe: Wallace; He y e s,
