Great Harwood have now won more matches than any other team, apart from Read. They have, however, lost as many matches as they have won, but because of the league system of awarding four points for a win, they are in a much better posi tion than teams who have lost two and three fewer matches.

WHALLEY IN TIGHT FINISH
WHALLEY’S game at Baxen den did not end until
eight o’clock after the home team had claimed the extra overs in an effort to force a
victory. When time expired Baxenden
still needed ten runs to win and they had three wickets in hand so that the game could have very easily gone cither
like winning but after Baxen den had lost early wickets J. Horabin (35) and A. Ormcrod (27) completely changed the picture and put Baxenden on
way. At one time Whalley looked
top. Whalley, who were without
their skipper Gordon Topham, opened their attack with Jim Rudd and Jim Peters, both of whom did fairly well. Later Barry Varley captured two cheap wickets but Queen the profesional did not meet with success and Whalley could well have done with another bowler. Whalley’s batting was reason
ably sound but not spectacular. Jim Peters and Queen took
some of the edge off Barnes and Simmons and T. Parkinson followed with a very useful con
tribution of 27. Most of Whalley’s batsmen,
however, could make little of the bowling of Ken Savage who finished the afternoon with the excellent figures of 5 for 29. WHALLEY

TOM PENDER AND BRIAN PARKINSON JOIN FLEETWOOD
X'VO of Clitheroc Football Club's regular players, last season, Toni Pinder, the club’s leading goalscorcr and
Brian Parkinson, the skipper, have joined Fleetwood. Following last season's dismal experiences Clitheroc
decided to let both players go. Pinder, who came to
Clitheroe as an outside left from Southport, achieved his greatest fame when as a centre-forward and sometimes as an inside forward, he became the club's leading goalscorer for two or three
seasons in succession. He will be remembered for his
terrific shooting, and when he came to Clithoroc at first, his bursts of speed down the. wing. Ma n y supporters consider however that Pinder shone most in the half-back lino. Certainly
lie gave one or two sterling per formances at centre-half but, at that time there was strong com petition for the position and Pinder returned to the attack where lie continued to give erratic displays, sometimes be ing brilliant, and sometimes
completely irritating. Brian Parkinson, brother of
Eric, the well-known former Lancaster City half-back, prom ised to be an outstanding player when he first joined Clitheroe but many spectators consider he sacrificed science for vigour and

The 32-mile course, with its
twists and corners, hard grades and breath-taking downhill swoops, has altered considerably since the first trial in 1934, but it still pre sents a formidable test to the
most experienced rider. Seven competitors presented
