BRITAIN is gaining a world

lead in the latest of com puter techniques — mechanical

translations. In a semi-basement room at

Birkbeck College, University of London, a team of experts in the Department of Numerical Automation is working on a research programme which will eventually result in the estab lishment of a library of taped instructions which will enable

computers to translate at speeds of more than 10,000 words an hour. The highest speed at

which translations can be done be human linguists is 500 words an hour.

ANY LANGUAGE Explaining the work of the

Department of Numerical Auto mation. Dr. M. Lcrison said that research was at present being conducted on the pro gramming for French trans lations. A computer, he added, could handle any language pro viding the appropriate instruc tions had been fed into its ’ ’memory.” Basic numbers were used, one

representing A, two B, and so on, throughout the alphabet. The piece to be translated was typed on a teleprinter, which encoded it numerically on a tape. This was fed into the computer which on the output end produced the required translation. Dr. Levison s ai d t h a t

mechanical translations did not aim to be literary gems. That must always be. the work of the human translator, but they provided an accurate and gram matical translation.

N O T O N E A U T H O R ? Another line of research being

the Common Market, this research becomes even more important. Another aspect of the work is the mechanical trans lation of scientific papers. I t is becoming impossible for human agents to handle all these papers because of growing output; as a result, half the world’s scientific literature is written in languages which half the world’s scientists cannot read today. This situa tion will be overcome with the development of mechanical translations.
