MISSING CRAFT PROVED COSTLY

JT was a case of the needle being more effective than the hammer at Shaw Bridge, on Saturday, when Clilheroe

crashed at home to New Brighton by 2—0. Clitlicroc, lacking the skill to penetrate the New Brighton

goalmouth, relied on long-range drives to find the net. With Jack Richardson in superb form between the New

Brighton posts, Brian Parkinson and Tom Pindcr saw their shots tipped over the bar or plucked from the air. The New Brighton method

commendable accuracy slipped the ball wide or the groping Wallace into the corner of the

net. How much simpler this was

than the hit or miss approach ot CUtheroe. The home side had only one forward, Bern a r d Wallbank,

capable of making a s u r e opening. But when he gave Pindcr two easy chances and one to new-signing Derek Bolan, they dallied In the goalmouth and were eventually crowded

out.- No blame can be laid on the

NINE WICKETS TO SPARE

j^lEAGUE champions Rib blcsdalc Wanderers were presented with the league

trophy oil Saturday by the Ribblcsdalc League president

Mr. E. Hotlgkinson. They had earned the trophy

earlier by a rout ol last year's champions Baxenden, whom they dclcatcd by nine wickets. Again it was Malcolm Dennett,

Wanderers' pace bowler who Is to leave the club to turn profes

sional next season, who did the damage. He had Baxenden opener W.

Tattcrsull taken behind the wicket without a run on the board and he continued the bar

rage until he had captured five wickets for 28 runs and Baxen den were all out for 84.

J. R. Duckworth. D. Whittam

and J. Horabin briefly defied the attack but the tailend was neatly wrapped up by Dennett and professional John Ingham.

JACKMAN TOO GOOD FOR WHALLEY

T>EAD'S professional. West ■^Indian Rupert Jackman, dis played some or his big-hitting prowess at whallcy on Saturday, where Read won by eigh t

wickets. Jackman came to the wicket

when John Rawcliilc was caught with the score at five. He soon showed confidence and his first scoring stroke was

a mighty hit on to the railway embankment. Play was held up for several minutes until the ball

was found. Jackman was finally stumped

off the Whallcy professional. Lol Queen, when Read needed

only one run to win. Earlier, Jackman had contri

buted much to Whalley's slump in making only G2 runs.

He soon knocked back the

stumps of Jimmy Peters and two quick wickets by Ivan Wilkinson had Whalley struggling at six runs for three wickets.

Whallev lost their first six wickets with only 21 on the board

but P. Gorton and G. Ireland improved mutters, from the Whalley point ol view. But Jackman came back to

capture the three remaining wickets to finish with six tor 26.
