AUTTE recently a housewife In .Staffordshire bought a
’washing machine from a door to dpor salesman. She asked the salesman to fit her a plug to the flex on the washing machine but he replied. Oh ho,-that was a Job for her— any child could do it, so when her daughter came home from school she asked her to fix it.
The daughter- had been
taught about electricity and 'knew that the red flex should be attached to the live terminal, the black to neutral and the green to earth.
She fixed the red to the live
and the green to eartli biit she was a bit flummoxed
'when she found that the third flex was not coloured black. However, as, there was only one terminal Iqft, she fixed that to. the neutral .
ON HER BACK ; Her mother then turned (in
the washing machine,, took hold of the lid, and ended up on her back at the other end of the kitchen.
A young chap In Kent
recently bought a i6 milli metre fllm projector. He also fixed the three flexes to tlie three terminals of the plug, red to live, green to earth and the other coloqr to neutral, j
He Swltohed on but It
wouldn’t work, so'he started crawling round it on hls hands and 'knees prodding ’ it here and there to see If he could make It start. Nothliig happened until-the back pf hls hand touched a hot water pipe while his right ihatid prodded the works. Then .he collected quite a nasty shock.
CONTINENTAL MAKE | By British standards, these
people had made the rlg(i.t c o n n e c t i o n s , but un!- fortunately,
t h e , appliances
they had bought didn’t happen to be British. They were Continental makes; aiid oh the Continent they have different colours for con nection to the different terminals. ■ '
, ] ; Similar Instances to those
quoted are happeningTaally all over the country, and are on the increase what with the ^ropean Common Mukbt 'and. reductions on Import duties Into this country. It might happen to you!
I So it Is not enough now to know how to connect a, three core flex to a three phi plug according to British standards.. If .it happens, that you’ve bought/a Continental make of appliance, you are

to get a lu are sta: ir that
FAR WISER I t is far wiser to get an
electrical contractor to a itaoh the plug t(| , your new appliance for you, unlesi' you are quite certain it is of British make. | If It Is, and you know the British standard colours for earth, neutral and live, you should be all : right] but If you are In any doubt go to a reputable [electrical con-] tractor, and ntit to a Bandy (Andy round tlie comer wh() probably doesn’t know any more abbut the Continental colours of flexep than you do.
The National Inspection Council for Electrical Iiistal- latioh Contracting issues a Roll of Approved' Electrical Contractors who 'have tary undertaken that work Shall cdmply to wiring; regulations of Institution of lElec Engineers which lay “ the minimum requto necessary to , ensure from -fire and' shock,” these contractors are ted periodically by .lnspe' of the National Inspe Council to see that they tain the standard, and to them up to date.
