New Cemetery Needed At V^aUey ^

grave space in 'Whalley Church yard is almost at an eiid and that, a new cemetery will be needed by about the end of the | year.;

' • , , ; The provision of a new

cemetery has been under dis cussion for several years. Sometime ago, the parish

councils of Whalley and Wiswell established a Joint Cemetery Committee and negotiations have taken place respecting land fronting on Clitheroe road. The discussions have hot been com pleted but in view of the position at 'Whalley C h u r c h y a r d a meeting of the Cemetery Com mittee is to be held to expedite the scheme.

.Magazine, the vicar (Rev. C. R. Brown) says he hopes it will be. possible to find sp^ce in the churchyard for the burial of a^es after cremation, and that thisV/ i l l encourage what many people beUeve .to be a much more desirable form of burial."

Girls’ Club Forgot Ike Records

m e m b e r s of the Catholic Girl’s Club set off In high

spirits to a double, event on Saturday, a physical culture display at Bolton and a visit to Manchester Opera House to see the play “ No Room at the Inn.”

Perhaps they were too ex

dancing display,, The coach had already reached Whalley' before they made the ; dis covery,, and thanks are due to the quick-thinking girl who caught a ’bus toi Clitheroe and collected the all-impor tant discs. Undeterred by such an unpromising start, they thoroughly e n j o y e d themselves at Bolton In spite of some c nfuslon during one of their dances. Afterwards, they went on to Manchester to see the play

SOLVING A PROBLEM As with most Youth Clubs,

lack of financial assistance is the chief cause of worry to the Squires, and at their meeting bn Sunday they dis cussed “ how to! get rich quick.”- Many methods were suggested and finally it was decided th a t a dance would help to solve the problem, and th a t the entertainments com mittee should get busy.

two men whose names were given as Hin,dle and put to

Clitheroe County Magistrates on Monday when thiy heard a case in which Marion Perry (47) of 83, Hodder-street, Accrington, appeared on six summonses of obtaininf money by false pretences. Involving a total of £108 6s., from liifelong friend” Mrs. Margaret Ann Scott, Ye Olde Whalley B[ouse, King-street, Whalley. — |—------^

-------------- Perry, who pleaded not

guilty, was bound over for 12 months and ordered- to p'ay costs and an advocate’s fee of £5 5s. She was also ordered

to make restitution of £75. “We are of the opinion that there has been Insufficient evidence to prove to us that Mr. Hindle and Mr. Robinson are real people ” said Aider- man J. H. Satterthwalte, an nouncing the Bench’s decision. Mr. R. H. Rowland, who pro

secuted, said Peny and Mrs. Scott had been friends for about 20 years.. Early In 1947, Mrs. Scott bought a house and shop In Read which she pro-

, posed to turn Into a cafe. Miss Perry knew her plans,

- Scott gave Perry money to purchase goods from this man, whom she called 1“ Charlie

Hindle.” ■ : The police had made com

prehensive enquiries to- find Hindle or anyone answering his description i n . the same line of business, but without success. I t was an! extraor dinary coincidence, said Mr. Rowland, th a t Miss Perry had always been alone iwhen in Hindle’s company, and that the man had never been seen

by anyone else. She had given a full descrip

tion of him to the police, and it seemed incredible th a t in

these days of registration thei police with all the resources at their command, I should not be able to find him;

went on. Perry glided the lily by producing a second, man

called Robinson , whom she said was giving up a butchery business and had a refriger ator and other articles for

. disposal. Perry had also given, a

detailed description of Robin son, but again the police had' riot been able to trace him, despite the fact th a t a butcher could not carry on business without-people know ing it. The: prosecution alleged tha t thei-two men. In fact, did not exist. .

In evidence, Mrs Scott said

that she had ' never' seen either of the men, and. had riot got receipts from Perry for the money she gave her for the goods. “I trusted her as a lifelong friend’’ she said.. Cross-examined by Mr.: J. E.

her, and had written! letters on ! her behalf,- to the Food Oflfice, and had generally helped her In ’jnany, ways.

Perry said she jherself\ had beep duped of £ 3 7 10s. of her own money;'

statement by Perry th a t she had passed 'on| money to Hindle and Robinson for Mrs. Scott’s furniture, and had subsequently made extensive Inquiries In an effort to trace the men.

Perry had led them .to believe that she had knocked them from fllndle’s mouth In the struggle. : : P.S. Haslewood: said Perry caipe to the'pollce station and described an alleged assault by Hindle. Her story was in coherent and ishe smelt strongly of spirits;

UKE SISTERS Perry told the !Bench that-

she! had frequently bought goods on Mrs. Scott’s behalf. She had. gone with her to the Pood Office about a licence. All'in all they i were “ like,! sisters.” ■ She had written letters for her, and after Mrs. Scott had bought ithe house at Read, she had offered the occupants alternative accom modation at Accrington to allow Mrs. Scott .vacant pos session.
