1, Church Street. RY PER IN SCOTLAND.

• I am writing-this in the train oh my way to Norway so can-only say a few words as to tho well-being of the ryper I iiavc imported. ' I liear of isolated birds and pairs in different jrlaccs, and tire ones which liavo remained with me are nesting botli among tliemselves and witlr red grouse, as mates. Neither tiro pure-bred birds not tire crosses liave as yet taken to tire open moor ; in fact, tliey seem to

■ move tlieir ground very little, and some day I liope to. find enough to make a good mixture in tire bag, tvdiere at present tliere is little except a few black-game arid rabbits. We slrall be able to procure ryper at a.mucli smaller price soon, and I liope someone else may get some over. The West Coast would be tire ideal place ftir them.. The seutimeutal idea of a ryper cross spoiling our red grouse can never be borne out, as the birds are absolu tely identical except “ climatically” if 1 may use that expression.

A QUAINT NESTING-PLACE. Last year I recorded the fact of a bare

depositing three infant leverets on the side of a bunker on the Wellington Golf Links, near Eastbourne. This spring a wbeatear made her nest on tire sar-ne golf links in an almost equally curious place, namely, underneath a temporary driving tee, made of stout board and covered witli cocoanut matting. In spite of the dangers of so public a place, the .wlreatear suc cessfully liatched out four young ones, wlricb I am in Iropes may be allowed to develop into full-gi'own birds. My ..at tention was called to the fact of such a singular nesting site by a lynx-eyed caddie, who bad previously spotted the nest, arid ran fonvard to see if the nestlings were all riglit. .
