Mr. J . Turner, G, The Avenue, IVallseud, Ne.vcastle-on-T.viic.

Mrs. Gjiving, Malloiio Paik Drive, Ripon; Tliougil he has now completed 27 years'

aiipruved police service, our worthy Chief Constable, Mr. W. Clayton, has no desire to spend the remainder ot his life, at least whilst he is vigorous, in. idleness, and has intimated tliis to the Watch Committee and the Town Coiineil Itave wisely decided to retain his services. Whilst the Chief Constable reaiis some little teniporary ad vantage from this arrangement, the saving to the Corporation will be a great one, and their action in this matter is commetidable from the iKiculary point of view as well as in desiring to retain the services of a tried and trustworthy servant. 'I he duties of a Chief Constable are not always pleasani, and they have much to do with the seamy side of life, yet in Clitheroe there is no cause for coiiiiilalnt on the score of lack of courtesy and kindly consideration on the part oi' our Chief of Police by those whose actions, whetlier good or evil, bring them into touch with tire police.

Wo have to record with regret the death

of Mrs. Margaret Cuckshutt, of < i , Chatburu road, Clitheroe, whleh occurred une.xpectedly on Tuesday evening last. Mrs. Coekshutt, who had attained her 73id year, had ever been blessed with good health and a sound physique, and until quite recently had ex perienced very little sickness, consequently her death came as a great shock to the mem bers of her family, and to neighbours aud friends generally. The widow of the late Mr. George Coekshutt, Mrs. Coekshutt spent 10 years at Worsaw Hill Farm, where she gained the esteem aud respect of the little commuuity in the neighbouihood by her sympathy and rcadiucss to extend a frioudly baud to those iu siokness and iii need of assistance. Sue was a constant worshipper at Dowiiham Wesleyan Chapel where Mr. Coekshutt, also, was for very many years a Sunday school teacher, and an active worker aud supporter of the Methodist cause there. Mrs. Oockbhutt took a very optimistic view

of life, was ever bright and cheerful, ready to give couusel aud good advice, aud she leaves a vacant place iu the . affections of all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. She leaves two sous and two'daughters : Mr. George Coekshutt. .(Wofsfon), Mr..'Robert Coekshutt, (Chatburu), Mrs. Alderman T. Cowgill, aiid Miss Annie Coekshutt. The iu- termeut took place at Chatburu Church on Thursday afternoon.

About 20 teachers of St. Mary’s lower
