HUGE SCORING A T CHURCH MEADOW.

The final tie in the Ribhlesdale Wan

derers C.C. Medal Competition was played cm Monday, Tuesday and Wednes day evenings. The contesting teams were the Conservative Club and the Bicycle Club, and the game drew large attendance.s each evening. 'Ihe skipper of the Ricjcle Club won tlie toss and elected to bat. Mitchell and Cook open ed the innings and gave the side a good start. Tl.ie light was very bad but play continued until six wickets were down for 138, to wiiieh Mitchell had conlribuled 58 not out and A. E. Dixon 30. On Tuesday evening the Bicycle Club

continued their innings, Mitchell and A. Jackson going to the wickets. Ivtins came slowly, ljut the side wa.s not dismissed until 181 bad been recorded. Mitchell [dayed throughout the innings and contri buted 92 not out. On Monday night he played splendid cricket and never gave the semblance of a chance, but on Tues- d.ay he was rather erattic ami gave two

easy chances. The Conservathes oiiened with Ratcliffe

and Hindle against the bowling of Jack- son and T. Dixon. From the start runs came at a good pace, especially from the liat of Hindli’. and when the first wicket

fell at -10 he had contributed 32. Crabtree was missed first ball by Mitchell, and profiting by Ids lucky escape he went for the bowling to some effect, and at the close of ])lay the st ore was 85 for one. The game was continued on Wednesday

night, and it was unfortunate that rain should have interfered with the gate. Ral- cliffe and Crabtree continued the innings, and though the former did not add to his overnight score, with the advent of Burnett the score was taken to 193 for the lo.ss of two wickets. Crabtree 88 not on t, and Burnett 38 not out batted finely. Tlie Bicycle Chib were v'cry badly

served in lls' fielil. Not only was Crab tree missed bifore he had scored, but many strokes wliieb went to the boundary should not have seood. 'I'lie Conservatives have proved themselves a very strong batting team, and in two malrhcs in the eom])eli- ion have scoretl over 100 rtiiis for the loss of 7 wickels. One of til.- be.st individuai hatting jx'r-

formances in the eompetition is credited to J. Mitcliell who has gone right through the innings in two matches and has Iteen not out each lime with 92 to his credit ■As to howling performances, the “hat trick' has been performeil several times, and s]icctatois have l.iccn provided with plenty of entorlaitnent tlironghoiit live competi tion. The .scores in the final were as follows:

“ THE INFERNAL DRINK. ’

GOOD A D V IC E J-'ROM T H E B E N C H .

At the Borough Police Court, this morn

ing, before J. Brown, Esq., and Dr. V\'. E. Musson, Elizabeth Greer, a widow, who seeks to make a livelihood for herself and three children by jiedalling small articles, was charged in custodv with hav ing been drunk and disorderly the previous evening. Prisoner appeared in the do.'k with an infant at the breast, and the other children were present, whose sobs, ming led with those of the mother, made the proceedings of a very painful character. P.C. Turner stated that about G-20 p.m

he was called to the lodging house in Marlborough Ntreet to the prisoner who was drunk, causing a disturbance, and fighting with her daughter. He requested the woman to be quiet and go to bed, but she refused, and a little later he was call ed in a second time. Atferwards she was ejected by the manager of the lodging house, and as she renewed her disorderly conduct there was no alternative but to take her into custody. Tlic Chief Constable said this was a very

sad case. The womans husband died suddenly about two years ago leaving her with three children whom she had main tained by pedalling, and he was told by the daughter that they had never been in a common lodguig-house until they came to Clitheroe about three weeks ago. Yes terday, it appeared, the woman was ill, and she had a glass of whisky. This was followed by a second, and then a glass of bc‘cr, in consequence of which she became inebriated and quarrelled with her daugh ter. Tire police must assert their authority in that part of the town where so many strangers congregated, and there was no alternative but to take her into custody. He had no wish to be harsh; the circum stances were very hard, and if the Magis trates would fine the prisoner 6d. and -I-. Cd. costs he would allow her time to pay. She was about to leave the town for Heo- den Bridge and might there find empli-y- nient. She was a native of Liverpool, he understood, and it was but fair to say the children were not neglected and they .vere .above the average , of frequenters of coii- mon lodging house. Dr. Mussoii gave the woman some sound

advice, and told her to leave the “ irifernal stuff” alone in future. I f she was appre hended again on a similar charge it might lead to the forfeiture of her certificate and her children would be taken awav.

shows th;it has been held in the Clitherue Auction i\Iarl for some years jjast. Tiie entry for ciilved cattle wits exeellent, there never having been as many young cattle offered in on day that were so full of qual ity both in culour and milking prupeiisities The cunsignors had not mucli difiieully in finding purchasers fur iheir cattle- The judging for milk cattle was left to the re sponsibility of Messrs. J. Wliittaker and J. H. H'olgate, Griiidleton, who made the following awards; Dairy cow: 1, C, Cal vert, Waddingtoii; 2, T. Dewhurst, Wad- dingtoii; he., C. Calvert. 1-Jeifer: 1, T. Wilson, Dumfries; 2, T. Tomlinson, Read. At the sale which I'ollowed trade was very brisk, ami it was surprising liow quickly the milcif cattle were disposed of at tile following prices:—Calved cows (heavy young cattle), ;^I8 15s. to ,£23 5s; heifers, £17 liOs. to £'20 7s. Gd; the middle class found better trade at £13 5s. to £1G 15s. Before the commence ment of tlie .Store sale, it was necessary to di.scontinue for about 20 minutes to allow the milch cattle to be cleared away to

make room for the lying-off cattle which had arrived in great numbers.

The

judging o f the best pairs was left in the hands of Messrs. J. H. Holgate and W. Duxbury, I . ikwie Green, who awarded the prizc'4 to the lollowing: 1, R. Simpson, Wad lu'igh.n, with a beautiful young pair of roan lx;:ist.s full of bloom and quality. This pair were sold to Messrs. J. Whit taker and Sons for the sum of £-11. Mr. A. Ble:izard, of Burnley, came .second with a couple of rich roaned cattle, but were a little later iii their calving. Mr. Simpson again came third. At the sale which followed a very brisk trade was car ried on, the buyers Ixiing in full force, and the abundance of keep m the country made them anxious to purchase. The following were the averages for September to No vember cabers; £16 15s. to £ 2 1 ; smal ler sons and a little lower in condition,
