tliat- aforoLimo women took less stimulants and (ewer nerve sodativas ttian now. Tliey did drink, to bv sure, .ns is shown by l-lio startling records of tiio daily atlowanco of lioor onmmonly mado to a lady-in-waiting in llio early eighteenth century; but thongli it may liave ruined Mieir figures and complexiinKS, it did not do so nmch liarm in. tho end as alcoiiol, wines, and li'iuenrs. And oven these, i-erliaixs, are less pernicious than tho insidious drugs wldcli, it must bo relucUntly admitted, are ireely taken by women of tho present day. A dozen years ago it was an open secret that morphia and cocaine were enslaving fashiouablo women more tlian all the spirituousjiquors over distilled. And now chemical rese.arcli lias made it e.asier than over for women to indulge secretly in the drug habit. Dc.idly sedatives aro now prepared in tho daintiest and apparently most imiocont forms. It is not too mucli to say tliat any girl, it she bo so minded, can obtain morplda, cocaino, red lavender, or anything else of tlie kind sho may fancy, as easily M the factory girl her clieap and fiery spirits; nor is the statement exaggerated that in boudoirs there are far more drugs consumed than there are alcoholio beverages in smoking-rooms.

SiQKs o r Autumn. With tbo shortening days and tho return of cooler

I'nrs liavo replaced chiffons in Hond-stroot windows, the shapes ot muffs and polorinca sliewing little cliango from last year. Largo flat moleskin and chincliilla muffs are marked at summer prices, and the furriers expect to do a fair bueiness in August and Soptember, especially with country

customers. I was surprised to see a whole window of a famous Wigmore-streot establishment given up to thick hand-knitted lerseys, In every shade of wool. Tlie turn-over collar and cuffs were of some contrasting colour, such as violet ou white, orange on black, or pale blue on navy blue. These jerseys looked very smart and shapely, and were marked at a guinea each. Felt hats were the prin cipal feature in a largo Oxford-street shop. AVhito felts are always much worn in September and October, and I saw several pretty brown tolte trimmed with orange wings. Orange will ho the most popular decorative ohade for the coming.
