WHALLEY. (By ‘‘ Abb^ite.’')

At the CEviger Agricultural Show on

Saturday Mr. David Hague, lAnib Hoe, won a first prize with a lonk tup, first and second in lonk tup lambs, second with lonk ewe and first with lonk ewe lamb.

Whalley people have had a splendid week

for the holidays and a large number of vE- largers have availed themselves of the op portunity afforded them of visiting the sea side and other pleasure resorts.

CYCLIST, SERIOUSLY INJUI^D. A serious cycling accident occurred at

Cock Bridge on Wednesday evening. Tlenry Hudson, Clement-street, Accrington, wajs proceeding down the hill, which is very rough, in company with a party, yrhen the frame of his machine broke in two. He was thrown heavily to the ground over the machine, sustaining injuries to his face and body and concussion of the brain. He was suffering badly from shock. Luckily Dr. Patchett was within call, and after the wounds were dressed the sufferer was re moved home.

REV. W. H. HEALEY CENSURED. The Archbishop of Canterbury, as

Acting-Bishop of the diocese of Ely, has addressed a strong letter to the Rev. W. H, Healey (formerly of Whalley) on what he calls the Simoniacal transaction in con nection with the latter's recent appointment to the rectory of Brent Eleigh, Suffolk. You have assured me, he writes, that in

what took place you did not intentionally behave in such a manner as to make you party to a simoniacal transaction. You must pardon me if I say that I find it most difficult to understand how any honourable man of reasonable mtelligeuce can, under whatever persuasion or advice, sign such a document as the lease which wap produced

in Court and subsequently make the declara tion required by law to the effect that he has not ‘ received the presentation in con sideration of any sum of money, reward, gift, profit, or benefit, duectly or indirectly promised by him or by any person to his knewledge or with his consent to any per son whatsoever.’' I am miable to change the opinion which

t-H If

I expressed to you m our uiterview of abso lute astonishment that any man who has weighed the sacred responsibilities attach ing to the acceptance of the cure of souii^ aud who in connection therei^ith makes the solemn declarations prescribed by law, can claim to be exonerated from blame on the gromid of ignorance of what he was doing. The Archbishop concludes that, as strong

testimony has been borne in his favour from many quarters, the justice of the case will be met by the fact that he has forfeited the benefice to which he was appointed and is for ever disabled from being reappohited to

it.

Society held their annual pic-nic on Mon day, the choice of the party being Winder- mere. It was a jovial company of about 44 which left Whalley on pleasure bent at

twelve minutes to eight on Monday and Uie many lively incidents which occurred at intervals served to make the day one that wiU be remembered for a long time to come. The first of these cropped up at Preston where one section got ahead of the other only to be outstripped by those in the faster train which foEowed- At Camforth another advance party of about ten unde- signedly stole a march on their comfreres’

who, having duly changed, entrained for Lake Side, the rendezvous for the time being, and on arrival there were surprised to find awaiting them the comrades they were supposed to have left behind, the lat ter having travelled via Windermere. , What is more they had had time to lunch while waitui> for their brethren. Once more united the party had a most enjoyable saiE to Ambleside, and after a look round re turned to Bowness. A first-class dinner was served at Windermere. The next hbur or so was wEed away by a vis'it to Orrest Hear!, whence a view was obtained of the loveliest sunset it has ever been the privi-

l^ e of the various piuuibers of the party to see. That sight, so magnificent to behold), wa^ alone worth the visit to Windermere.

The return journey began at 8-20 and when Whalley was reached about half past eleven everybody expressed themselves highly saths- fieJ with the annual outing for 1905.
