times, has been largely coiiuibuled to from local sources— we refer lo that with which the miine of Afessrs. IVliipp is connected iii conjunction with one of tlie professors at Owen’s College, Manchester. Unlike most patents of the present time, which we gener ally in the direction of complicated or labour-saving machinery, tlie one which we have to record is one that will benefit llm home, and is siiecially .applicable to domestic use. For many years past Coroners have been crying out against the great danger, and inflamability, of flaimelette goods as wearing apparel, and we are pleased to state Uiat this danger has now been met by the new process, wliich puactically fireproofs all kinds of ilanneleUe and cotton goods. Alothcrs will no longer be afraid of le.aving the child ren’s fiamieleue or cotton garments before the lire, for should a red hot cinder fall on to any of the s.aid garments it c.onnot set fire to them if treated by this process, but will merelv bum a hole through. Afessrs. AVliipp fiivouretl our representative with a pr.aclical denioiistration the ether day of what flannelette fireproofed with the process is capable of withstiuiding. A large piece of flaimelette was Uikeii and a lighted taper applied to it, but without any effect beyond a slight sparking of the fluffy cover of the material. Both gentlemen then held the flaimelette in a vertical position and aiipheU the lighted taper to the edges, but the nialer- ial again refused to ignite, and last of all the lighted taper was allowed to lie on the material for upwards of a minute, without any effect. T he material on which the e.x- periments were triiM was a large piece, such im is used for making underclothing. Messrs.

M'hipp further informed our representative that if a re<l hot cinder from the fire was to fall on any garment fireproofed by the new iirocess, there would be no burning of the material, other than that caused by the c)n- der laying iqKiii it. What Alessrs. \\ hipp claim for their invention is not so much the mere fireproofing, but the fact that the material still remains fireproof after Mashing tM-enty or thirty tinie.s.
