The Imarest Welcomes New Chief Executive


Henk Piet – Electric Dredger For Dutch Civil Engineering Firm


Netherlands-based marine projects company Koninklijke Oosterhof Holman (KOH) has taken delivery of its newest deep suction dredger, the all-electric Henk Piet.


The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) has announced the appointment of Chris Goldsworthy as the new Chief Executive. Chris replaces Gwynne Lewis who is retiring, having been in the position since 2020.


Chris is a Fellow of the IMarEST and former Cyprus Branch Chair. He embarked on his career as an Engineer Cadet with P&O Containers, where he spent 16 years at sea, achieving the rank of Chief Engineer Officer.


He transitioned to shore-based roles in 2005 as a Technical Superintendent, and his journey has led him to technical, fleet, management and director positions.


Chris Goldsworthy, IMarEST Chief Executive says: “It’s an honour to take on this role for the Institute that I have been a passionate member of since I started my career. The Institute is unique in bringing together engineers, scientists and technologists in the sector and I am looking forward to working with our members to solve some of the biggest challenges we have ever faced, to shape a more sustainable future for the marine sector.”


Custom-built by the TV Dredging division of the Holland Shipyards Group, the vessel has a length of 22 metres and is of modular construction, though the vessel is initially deployed at the Fochteloërveen protected area in Friesland province where it will support nitrogen extraction activities.


The Fochteloërveen is one of the last raised bogs in the Netherlands and in need of periodic dredging. The rainwater that is normally retained runs through leaky quays from the area. In order to prevent the raised peat from disappearing the old quays will be replaced by sustainable sand quays over approximately 50 kilometres.


Dredging can be performed up to a depth of 37 metres with two 600kWh electric pumps. The dredger itself is stationary, it draws power from the local grid via a shore connection instead of relying on onboard generators that would otherwise emit greenhouse gases.

“Digital Learning Management System” is an education and training suite of micro-learning videos, gaming apps for learning and virtual reality programs, and mentoring online.


ClassNK has verified the functions of “Digital Learning Management System”.


1. A comprehensive digital learning management system platform, consisting of a categorized library of educational videos, games, and VR programs tailored for seafarers, vessel managers, port state inspectors, and flag or class surveyors.


2. The collection of games and immersive virtual reality applications both based on actual shipboard situations.


3. A mentoring platform that allows users to connect with experienced industry mentors.


4. Digital training logbooks with detailed training content for each task accessible on any device.


5. Hosting of Safety Management System and STCW pre-joining briefings as well as a survey module allowing the ship management company to involve and seek the opinion of seafarers in real time, and issued a certificate to the company.
