ON THE FARM WITH RICH AT RISBURY
Each month Richard Thomas will join us to talk about life on his family farm in North Herefordshire, where they farm beef, sheep, arable and apples. Their ethos is to try to farm in a more regenerative style for the benefit of future generations.
I had a quick look at last year’s August column to see what was on my mind twelve months ago and perhaps guide my train of thought.
Perhaps unsurprisingly I could just copy and paste that article into this one and it wouldn’t be far out. Holiday and dry weather. We have again had a July holiday and we have returned to near ‘drought’ conditions. This third heatwave, in mid July has really checked grass growth right across the southern half of the country, my friends who farm in Lancashire has no lack of moisture, if anything they have got too much!
We managed to get away for a week this time and went to south Wales, staying near Tenby. We had a lovely few days, took a bike ride along the coastal path, visited friends and spent quite a lot of time in and around the sea. We played cricket, football and rugby on the beach and enjoyed the weather. It really was a nice break.
Of course, as many self employed people do, I worked a few extra hours before we went to get everything done and was pretty tired for the first few days!

As well as that I was rushing to get everything done before we left on the Saturday morning. I had managed to get everything somewhere near and then I found a water leak that I couldn’t really leave, so I had to dig down to find the join and fix that. Then the new bike rack I had ordered had not arrived, so we borrowed one and that didn’t fit my truck. So, we couldn’t take our bikes, although we did manage to hire some instead.
