JOHNSON’ S JEWEL LERS AQUAMARINE THE BIRTHSTONE FOR MARCH

10

There is something sincerely special about birthstones; they are a sublime example of a gift which holds an overwhelming amount of sentiment with a personal touch. Now we are in the month of March, we can celebrate the birthstone Aquamarine.

As spring slowly makes an appearance, the charming tones of an aquamarine match perfectly with the sunny spring morning skies. Not only does Aquamarine represent the birthstone for March, it’s also a representation of a new marriage. This gemstone is known to deliver a future of happiness to a newlywed couple (often used as the “something blue” for wedding days).

In simple terms, the word Aquamarine originates from the Latin word ‘aqua’ or ‘sea’ combined with the word ‘marine’. Old English tales have many stories on what was the aquamarine’s original purpose. Many state that aquamarine was a mineral used to protect sailors against foes whilst out at sea; this includes the myth of evil mermaids who would lure sailors towards the cliffs and rocks, towards danger.

In Nordic mythology an aquamarine rough crystal would be thrown into the water from the battleships on rough seas to calm the Gods. For all that, this very special mineral and is one of the most valuable, sought after gemstones on the market today.

Aquamarine belongs to the Beryl family; for the science enthusiast it has the composition of the chemical formula Be3Al2(Si16O18). Deposits of Aquamarine can be sourced from many countries - the majority are found by no surprise in Brazil;

however other countries include Central Madagascar, Pakistan, Malawi, Kenya, and Tanzania. Also recently a primary deposit has been found in Mexico.

Aquamarine’s colour range is very narrow: It can be blue, very slightly greenish blue, greenish blue, very strongly greenish blue or green-blue. Aquamarines most desirable colour is a dark blue to slightly greenish blue with moderately - strong intensity and saturation. In general, the purer and more intense the blue colour, the more valuable the stone. The colour blue is very popular when set into jewellery; it’s a colour that can complement any skin tone for any occasion. An aquamarine can be a soft delicate colour to wear on a warm summer’s day, or as equally look beautiful for a winters evening dinner date.
