Local television horticulturist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, shares her thoughts on a record-breaking show which recently attracted over 65,000 visitors to our part of the world!
Of all the show-grounds in all the wor ld, you must walk into this one! (To almost quote one of the most iconic lines in cinematic history!). For gardening and Malvern have a long-standing relationship which has proved the test of time. Whether it’s the Spr ing or in this case Autumn Show, Malvern is quite simply magnificent.
Tak ing place at the Three Counties Showground, in association with Westons, this year ’s autumn gather ing was blessed with dry weather and a plethora of smiling faces.
Here is a show for the whole family, wi th everything f rom plants to greenhouses, shoes to bobble hats, sculptures to pizza ovens and antiques to edibles. I t is undoubtedly; however, the giant veg which takes your botanical breath away and this year saw six Guinness Wor ld Records broken, with 132 growers battling it out for recognition.
The tallest runner bean plant was 8.006m and one sweet pepper in par ticular kept growing until it settled on 26.7cm, whilst the longest aubergine reached 49cm, putting mine at home ser iously in the shade! Muscles were in demand too with a par ticularly hef ty tomato setting a new UK and European record of 4.39kg
