PAUL MESCAL

FROM NORMAL PEOPLE TO TO GLADIATOR II

15

Much-anticipated sequel ‘Gladiator II’ hits screens soon! The film stars Paul Mescal, who plays Lucius in Ridley Scott’s epic, which comes 24 years after the release of the original ‘Gladiator’.

‘Normal People’ actor Paul was at a preview screening of the film in NYC, which is being hailed as the ‘best movie of the year’ and his performance as ‘shining’. There he spoke about how it felt to get the call from the legendary Ridley Scott, the intense training he had to do to bulk up for the part and the huge learning curve he has been on since his film debut three years ago.

‘Gladiator II’ takes place two decades after the events of ‘Gladiator’ [2002]. Lucius [Mescal] - grandson of Rome’s former emperor former emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla and Maximus [who was played by Russell Crowe in the original] - lives with his wife and child in Numidia. Roman soldiers led by General Marcus Acacius invade, killing his wife and forcing Lucius into slavery. Inspired by the story of Maximus, Lucius resolves to fight as a gladiator under the tutelage of Macrinus a former slave who plots to overthrow the young emperors Caracalla and Geta.
