“I have been blessed with a team that I have worked with over the years - we are like a family. I joke that every member has come along for work experience and just not left.”
What do you look for when mentoring or bringing new talent into your workshop?
“Watching someone’s creativity design and retail skills develop has given me a lot of pleasure. Learning in the Allen Brown way may not be fool proof but so far it seems to have been successful .”
DESIGN & SPECIALISM You specialise in coloured diamonds and rare gemstones, what draws you to these unusual materials?
“I’ve always been inspired by unusual colours shapes and sizes of gemstones. Many of which I’ve sourced directly from Brazil or at International shows. The variety and uniqueness of each stone never ceases to amaze and fire my creativity. ”
Can you tell us about a particularly memorable or meaningful piece you’ve created? and what makes a piece of jewellery truly “bespoke” in your eyes?
“In my early days at Ridware I did a commission for a lovely couple Mr and Mrs Eddie Edkins. To represent Mrs Edkins’ Irish roots, the design was based on the Celtic Tara brooch. Mr Edkins the English element was represented with roses engraved on the back. The reason that this is so significant for me is that they were the first couple who commissioned a major piece and with their encouragement it helped to give me the confidence in my own design and making abilities.

The above demonstrates what I think is a truly bespoke piece. Something commissioned by a customer and is a true one off. ”

40-YEAR MILESTONE How does it feel to be celebrating 40 years in business? and Looking back, what moments stand out as defining highlights of your career?
“If I’m honest I find it hard to believe that my business is coming up to its 40th anniversary. Like everyone in business, there are ups and downs and to still be here is a huge up. It has taken me quite a while to come to terms with that is such a huge milestone.
Looking back, it is hard to single out a particular highlight. I am just very grateful that I have a career doing something that I have loved and still love. But of course none of it would have been possible without our lovely amazing customers and to have been part of so many people’s milestones, a huge and lasting privilege. ”
