t might feel like time has stood still for many since the first lockdown back in March 2020. For a lot of the world, the lifting of the most restrictive measures this summer will have felt like the clock started ticking again. In this issue of Packaging Insight, we shed light on some of what’s been going on behind the scenes in the industry. We look at how drones are being used to deliver medical supplies to hard-to-reach destinations hit by natural disasters, all while the integrity and temperature of the cargo is monitored in real time. On page 4, Jackie Pullman finds out from a supply chain technology architect how distributed ledger technology can help keep track of legitimate medication and keep counterfeit products out of circulation. The method, which includes a patient scanning a barcode to ensure their medicine is legitimate, is yet another example of designing products and processes with patient centricity in mind, and that’s exactly what our drug delivery feature delves into on page 12. In it, Paul Greenhaulgh from Team gives Emma Green some insight into the creative process behind designing combined drug-device delivery mechanisms with patient needs in mind. From here, we’re brought back down to earth to face the very real climate crisis, with Monica Karpinski explaining the challenges of balancing medical need with the necessity of reducing the healthcare industry’s carbon footprint. Time might have felt as though it stopped, but the clock is still ticking on saving the planet.
