LARGE AND SMALL DIAMETERS, BELOW

The season of Spring is opening the hours to more daylight and stretching the legs to more gatherings, all the way into Summer, and later still. The bigger gatherings are beginning. In April, the No-Dig Show 2024

is hosted this time by Providence, RI. Training, talks and networking will feature at the conference and exhibition, focused on all things in trenchless tunneling in North America. We preview the event. We are also pleased to give

our first preview for UCA’s North American Tunneling (NAT 2024) show and exhibition – for all scales of underground works – to be held in Nashville, Tennessee, in June. There are plenty of travel bookings

to be made – and even more for those looking attend the World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2024), between those events. This year it is in Shenzhen, in China. Beyond the attraction of the No-

Dig Show 2024 and small diameter tunneling for utility services, RI is also a location for larger diameter mechanized bores – such as the recently completed large TBM drive for the Pawtucket Tunnel project. Our opening article looks at the project.

Then this issue takes some

snapshots of advance works getting underway for coming large transport tunnel projects in New York city – and also a smaller diameter tunnel for a utility on Long Island, and just fnished. With so much activity in small

diameters we have two further notable articles – one looking at a selection of projects, the other at trends and technology advances for slurry microtunneling in rock. In addition to our Buyer’s Guide

listing, this issue of T&TNA offers three further articles: an expert view of approaching design when dealing with waterproofing sealing for tunnel segmental lining; an explanation of the value and importance of community buy-in when seeking to develop plans for the very, very long- term with projects such as geological depositories for nuclear waste; and, a review of the approach taken and elements covered in the recent ITA/ IMIA Joint Code of Practice for Risk Management in Tunnel Works.
