Timberpak opens wood recycling super site in Leeds, UK

Recycling and reprocessing company, Timberpak Ltd, has unveiled its new site in Leeds, UK, following a multi-million pound investment into the six acre site on Cross Green Industrial Estate. The site will process 150,000 tonnes of recycled material per year, with potential for this to increase by 50% as the demand for wood-based recycled material continues. Waste wood sourced by Timberpak is used by EGGER (UK) Ltd to produce carbon negative chipboard panels

at its production sites in Hexham, Northumberland and Barony, East Ayrshire. The international wood- based material manufacturer has invested over £30m into its UK recycling operations over the last two years. In addition to the new Timberpak sites in Leeds, EGGER recently commissioned a new recycling plant at its Hexham site with the aim of increasing the recycled content in its panels by improving the quality of the processed recycled material used.

West Fraser reports recovering OSB demand in US during Q2

Panel products giant West Fraser says its OSB business saw recovering demand during Q2, given it sufficient confidence to increase its North American OSB shipments guidance for 2023. The company expects

near-term demand weakness in its European EWP segment but reiterates 2023 OSB shipments guidance of moderately above 2022 levels. Group Q2 adjusted EBITDA was US$80m (2022 Q2: US$58m).

The North American EWP segment recorded adjusted EBITDA of US$126m and the European EWP business recorded US$19m.

West Fraser says the seasonally adjusted annualized rate of US housing starts was 1.43 million units in June 2023, with permits issued of 1.44 million units, according to the US Census Bureau.

While there were near-

term headwinds to new home construction earlier in the year, owing in large part to the upward reset in interest rates and the impact on housing affordability, unemployment remains relatively low in the US and central bankers across North America have indicated that the current rate hiking cycle may be nearing an end.

The state-of-the-art site features the latest recycling technology, including two picking lines, a slow speed electric shredder, and a stockpiling system. Two new weighbridges and a loading bay have been installed, and weight tickets and delivery documents will be paperless. A sustainable approach has been taken at every opportunity; this includes 1,282m2

of 265kw solar

panels across the roof of the main building, and a dust suppression system. Health and safety is top priority for

the site, which has thermal cameras for stock heat control and a one-way traffic management system. “Not only will it increase our capacity and future proof our business, but it will further improve the high quality customers service we pride ourselves on,” said Mark Hayton, director, Timberpak. “The investment reinforces

our commitment to make more from wood and it will benefit generations to come by continuing to store the carbon absorbed by recycled wood during its growth.”

NESTRO founder receives Cross of Merit from Germany

Paulus Nettelnstroth, the founder of German-based extraction technology specialist NESTRO Lufttechnik, has received the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The award is given annually

by the Federal President for special achievements in the political, economic, cultural, intellectual or voluntary fields.

In December 1977, at the age of 29, Paulus Nettelnstroth founded his first manufacturing company, NESTRO Lufttechnik, in Bad König. The company was able to quickly grow rapidly and had

to move three times within only 10 years for capacity reasons, finally to Röllbach. In the wood industry, the time was simply ripe for premium- quality filter technology. In 2017, Mr Nettelnstroth handed over the management of NESTRO Lufttechnik GmbH to his son Robert and has been working in the background in an advisory capacity ever since. The company

manufacturers products and systems for extraction and filter technology and for their downstream heating technology, for surface engineering and for sorting and disposal technology.
