| Transmission & distribution NeuConnect on track

Aerial photos released 13 September show the latest construction progress on the €2.8bn NeuConnect project – the new 725 km 1.4 GW subsea HVDC link between the UK and Germany that will connect two of Europe’s largest energy markets for the first time.

Being developed by Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners, Kansai Electric Power and TEPCO, it is expected to be operational by 2028. Main contractors are Siemens Energy and Prysmian.

The converter station locations are Isle of Grain, Kent, UK, and Wilhelmshaven, Lower Saxony, Germany.

Main construction work started over the summer in the UK and is expected to commence at the German end of the link early next year.

Prysmian has completed HDD (horizontal directional drilling) pits at the Isle of Grain and, inland from the HDD works, Siemens Energy is preparing the site for the UK converter station, with construction of the converter station itself is expected to start next year.
