Rewiring Germany for the energy transition

North/south HVDC power transmission corridors will be crucial to the success of Germany’s energy transition

With the converter station contract for Project 3 – the Brunsbüttel–Großgartach part of SuedLink – placed in August, Siemens Energy is now supplying its converter technology to all three of the German HVDC corridor projects awarded to date, the other two being Project 1 (the multiterminal HVDC link consisting of Ultranet and A-Nord that will connect converter stations in Emden, Osterath and Phillipsburg) and SuedOstLink (aka Project 5).

All three will employ HVDC Plus, Siemens Energy’s self-commutated VSC (voltage-sourced converter) based HVDC technology. In addition to active power, the systems can also independently control reactive power, allowing them to respond flexibly to fluctuations in generation and consumption in the grid, and enabling low-loss transmission of power in both directions, with very fast fault-clearance. Each link will have a capacity of 2 GW. The SuedLink, SuedOstLink and A-Nord cables will be underground and rated at ±525 kV DC. For UltraNet, the cables will be mainly overhead, installed on existing poles and rated at ±380 kV.
