East Coast Cluster: world first CCGT+CCS
Moving from plan to delivery
The East Coast Cluster (ECC) in the UK brings together NZT Power – which is aiming to be the world’s first gas-fired power station with fully integrated carbon capture – and the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) – the UK’s first commercial-scale carbon dioxide transport and storage network. bp has recently decided to sell a portion of its shareholding in the two projects. ”As the NZT Power and Northern Endurance Partnership projects have reached major milestones, including financial close and the start of construction,” it said, “bp considers this the right time to sell a portion of its equity in both projects and bring in additional partners to support long-term value creation.” Power plant start up is expected in 2028 and as of late March 2026, total East Coast Cluster awards had passed £1.5 billion across more than 230 subcontracts as the construction supply chain has ramped up. NZT Power is a combined cycle power plant fully integrated with carbon capture. It will produce 742 MWe of “flexible, dispatchable low-carbon power.” This is net, including carbon capture and exhaust gas recirculation. The capture efficiency is estimated to be 95%, with up to 2 million t of CO2
captured and stored per year.
The power-plant-with-CCS is being delivered by a consortium of Technip Energies (leader) and GE Vernova (supplier of gas and steam turbines, generator, HRSG and exhaust gas recirculation technology), with Balfour Beatty (which has an £833 million contract) in the role of construction partner and Shell Catalysts & Technologies as capture technology licensor (supplying its CANSOLV amine capture system).

As well as NZT Power, the plan is for the Northern Endurance Partnership to serve other potential ECC carbon capture projects on Teesside and the Humber.

date across East Coast Cluster projects are: ● px Group, which has recently won the operations, engineering and maintenance (OEM) contract for NZT Power and NEP. Further long-term operation and maintenance contracts will follow.
● Cullum Detuners, which will deliver high- specification flue gas ducting, supporting 40 fabricators over 15 months.

● SPP Pumps, supplier of fire water pumps to NZT Power. The award is for a large, engineered pump house. The system will contain both diesel engine and electric motor driven FM approved split-case fire water pumps. The fire pump system will be completed with a secondary start system, fire suppression system, OH2 pressure maintenance pumps, local control and other safety equipment.
● Barrier Architectural Services, awarded the turbine hall HVAC package.
● Costain, which is working on the onshore carbon dioxide gathering system and has awarded 23 subcontractors to date, among them Adey Steel, which will fabricate six new steel bridges to support pipeline and high-voltage cable infrastructure.
