MHIENG and MHIET to demonstrate CCS for gensets
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering (MHIENG) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine & Turbocharger (MHIET), two group companies of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), are jointly
launching demonstrations of MHIENG’s CO2 capture technology in piston engine generator sets operated by MHIET. The testing constitutes an integral part of MHI Group’s goal for realising carbon neutrality under its “Mission Net Zero” programme.
Commencing in July 2022, and lasting for a total of 10 months, the demonstration marks
MHIENG’s first initiative aimed at capturing CO2 from piston engine flue gas.
It will be carried out using a compact CO2 capture system manufactured by MHIENG
and installed in gas fuelled gensets at MHIET’s Sagamihara in-house power plant in Japan. Testing carried out as part of the demonstration will examine the impact of gas engine flue gas properties on capture performance, and evaluate

Verification will also be performed employing an operational support service utilising MHIENG’s proprietary remote monitoring system. A fully integrated customer support structure is to be developed by MHI/MHIENG for carbon dioxide capture, encompassing all aspects, from planning the introduction of a capture system for gas engines to after-sales services, maintenance and operation.

In addition, a mass-produced compact CO2 capture system will be used in this genset
application and the system’s ease of installation and appropriateness for use in relatively small- scale facilities will be evaluated. MHI/MHIENG have been developing the KM CDR capture process and the Advanced KM CDR process in collaboration with Kansai Electric Power since 1990. MHIET intends to invite customers to tour the Sagamihara plant while testing is underway.
Mitsubishi’s new genset targets datacentres
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine & Turbocharger (MHIET) has launched a new series of gensets, MGS-R, “developed to support the
growing needs of the digital economy, primarily targeting data centres across Asian and Middle Eastern markets, the new series also serves as a reliable backup power solution for commercial facilities.”
The MGS-R series is the first upgrade to MHIET’s diesel genset lineup in over two decades, since the launch of the MGS-B in 2000. The new series features 21 models covering a wide range of rating categories. Some of the models were released in November 2021 and remaining models will be introduced by the end of 2022.

The new series provides installed capacities ranging from 500 to 2750 kVA for 50 Hz, and 460 to 2000 kVA for 60 Hz.
With recent modifications to turbocharger specifications and improvements in fuel and exhaust systems, all models in the new series boast 10-second start.
By adopting MHIET’s compact and high- power 12-cylinder engine for the 1500 kVA, 50 Hz machine, the footprint for this genset is the smallest-in-class.
Furthermore, the overhaul interval has been more than doubled by drawing on analysis of how gensets are actually operated at sites.
Biogas CHP expansion in Geer
Biogaz du Haut-Geer, a utility co-operative in eastern Belgium, has selected Cat dealer Eneria to double its cogeneration capabilities and “expand the sustainability benefits” of its biogas energy facility in Geer.
Eneria will design, install and commission a new CHP system that will use two Cat CG170- 16 biogas generator sets with integrated cogeneration systems to supply an additional 1.5 MW of power and 1.5 MW of heat while providing redundancy.
The Cat dealer is also providing components to help process the methane-rich biogas fuel, which is produced in anaerobic digesters from organic byproducts supplied by more than 30
food processing plants, local farmers and various other public and private partners. Additionally, Eneria will support the operation of the system through ongoing monitoring and maintenance. Scheduled for commissioning in the second quarter of 2022, the CHP system will provide electricity and heat for local industrial operations. Heat will also be used to optimise the biomethanisation process in the digesters, help produce high-quality organic fertiliser, and remove moisture from wood chips that are pressed into briquettes for fuel and marketed under the Flameco brand name.

generator sets that began producing 1.5 MW of power and 1.5 MW of heat in 2012. The current system produces biogas from 60 000 tons of biodegradable waste annually.
