Specialist high voltage engineering firm Smith Brothers has been appointed to provide ICP and EPC works at a new battery storage site for SUSI Partners and Eelpower’s joint venture in Halesworth, Suffolk, in the UK.
Smith Brothers will deliver a turnkey solution, including balance of plant for the battery storage, from initial design and EPC works to final testing and commissioning. Once complete, the 132 kV development will be able to provide over 50 MW of flexibility and balancing services to UK Power Networks. Advanced analytics for WTG blades
ONYX Insight, a consultancy providing data analytics to the wind industry, has partnered with energy provider TrustWind to streamline its blade maintenance strategies and reduce costs through dedicated blade inspections analysis of blade repair or replacement events for its Portuguese wind portfolio.
Renewables made up 67% of Portugal’s electrical generation mix in 2021. With wind power contributing almost half of this figure, cost-efficient turbine maintenance is key in supporting and accelerating the growth trajectory.
Effective blade monitoring has historically been a challenge for wind farm operators, leading to a reliance on reactive responses to issues that may already be severe. By drawing together reports based on historical data, and tracking trends in damage to each turbine model, deficiencies can be identified before further damage occurs, significantly increasing blade lifespan and performance. Extensive experience in different blade technologies and materials, and advanced analytics tools (such as AI HUB) enables ONYX to monitor the health of blades across wind fleets, identify risks, and schedule and prioritise repairs using insights from this data.
Javier Pérez Alonso, Business Development Manager Iberia, ONYX Insight, explains: “Wind turbine operators must proactively tackle the problem of blade failures. We provide solutions that identify issues in the early stage, supporting customers with repair audits and RCA (root cause analysis) projects on blade failures. With a more strategic overview of O&M, operators can save on costly repairs and see less asset downtime.”
ONYX Insight’s activity in Portugal covers 107 turbines and accounts for 214 MW of power generation. TrustWind’s portfolio amounts to 489 MW of generation across its 12 wind farms.

Ltd is also responsible for all engineering, procurement, and construction works. Smith Brothers will receive, install, and commission the 28 battery storage units – as well as construct the supporting infrastructure for each, including AC and DC cabling across the whole site with project-specific SCADA panels for the customer to be able to remotely control the whole site.
Mark Simon, Eelpower CEO, commented “Halesworth will be the first English 50 MW that the SUSI Partners and Eelpower JV [have undertaken] – it will be energised later this year.”
RWE to take on O&M at 630 MW London Array wind farm
Over the past year a tender process has been conducted to find out if there could be a more efficient way to deliver the range of O&M services needed at the 175 turbine London Array of the coast of eastern England. This has been conducted by London Array on behalf of its shareholders, RWE (30%), Orsted (25%), Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (25%) and Masdar (20%).
RWE, which operates eight offshore wind farms in the UK and a further five across Europe, was well positioned and won the 10- year contract on offer. Its range of services for London Array will commence in early 2023. RWE is a key player in the UK’s offshore wind market, with over 1.3 GW of operational
capacity and a further 6.5GW of offshore capacity under construction or development. This includes the Triton Knoll wind farm currently in construction (857 MW, RWE share 59%) and the Sofia offshore wind farm (1.4 GW, RWE share 100%).
The London Array wind farm is located 20km off the north Kent coast in the Thames Estuary. Its 630MW capacity can displace around 900 000 tonnes of CO2
a year. It is
maintained and operated from the Port of Ramsgate.
RWE has committed to investing €50 billion by 2030 to expand its green generation capacity to 50 GW, with around €15 billion earmarked for the UK.
Supporting the energy transition in Hong Kong
CLP Power Hong Kong (CLP) has awarded Fugro a 3-year non-destructive testing and environmental monitoring contract for three coal fired power plants undergoing transition to gas firing in Hong Kong. The new contract runs until 2024 and covers inspection, testing and monitoring services in CLP’s Castle Peak, Black Point and Penny Bay power plants. Between them they supply continuous power to more than 80 % of Hong Kong’s population.
CLP is committed to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and is, in the interim, reducing emissions by replacing coal-fired generation units with cleaner burning gas-fired units. Fugro‘s NDT and environmental monitoring services will support the safe operation and maintenance
of all generation units, provide a pre-warning system for deteriorating emission levels, and ensure legal compliance on the journey to meeting net zero goals.
