Company insight A new era in N

ormet is a global technology company offering a continuous improvement to underground construction and mining processes for increased safety, productivity and profitability. It has a broad offering of equipment, services, construction chemicals and rock reinforcement products for underground mining and tunnelling. Normet’s complete technical solutions create value through saving costs and shortening process cycle times and are developed based on the welfare of people and on the care of the environment. The latest development, Normet’s Scamec LC Thor scaling machine, was introduced in the virtual Normet Innovation Day 2022 event on 10 November 2022. The new Scamec LC Thor makes the most challenging of underground operations safer. It is designed in close collaboration with Normet’s customers, combining the company’s decades-long experience in developing underground equipment with scaling operators’ invaluable experience in everyday scaling work. As a result, this purpose-built machine offers better boom accuracy and handling, work area visibility and operator ergonomics – and, consequently, delivers value by making the underground scaling process safer and more productive.

Safety as the priority

For Normet, safety is always the first priority. Consequently, the Scamec LC Thor has an extremely safe FOPS/ROPS approved cabin with excellent visibility due to the carefully designed structures, a highly useful reversing camera system, and heated wide-angle mirrors. The cabin’s windscreen is built with 22mm thick multi- layer glass and fitted with a protective grille to safeguard the operator from falling rock debris. Furthermore, the completely new

underground scaling

Normet is a global technology company offering a continuous improvement to underground construction and mining processes for increased safety, productivity and profitability. By launching the Scamec LC Thor, the company marks a new era in underground scaling.

Scamec LC Thor has been rigorously tested in the Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland, the deepest mine in Europe.

boom of the Scamec LC Thor is designed to minimise the risk of rockfall hazard by projecting falling debris to the side with guiders fitted on both longitudinal boom sections. The machine can also be equipped with an emergency escape function, activating an emergency sequence for lifting the stabilisers and the dozer blade, while engaging reverse gear and preparing the machine for reversing. The operator can then concentrate on steering the machine to safety after releasing the parking brake.

Improved ergonomics

Operator ergonomics and wellbeing has been a focal point in the entire design process of the new Scamec LC Thor. As a result, the cabin is highly comfortable with low noise levels and dust sealed with replaceable air filters. In addition, the cabin can not only be lifted 600mm for an even more extensive overall view of the working environment, but also tilted back 15 degrees to minimize the strain to the operator’s neck. The scaling hammer stroke is controlled with a foot pedal, allowing the operator to focus on maneuvering the boom. All frequently needed operating controls like the mini joysticks for accurate boom control and platform driving buttons are located

ergonomically on the seat switch panels. The machine is also fitted with a completely new, agile and accurate boom with state-of- the-art kinematics, precise control features and robust structures. The boom can be equipped with multiple different scaling tools for maximal versatility. Its advanced dust suppression system increases visibility even further and significantly improves air quality underground.

Scamec LC Thor carrier The Scamec LC Thor has an effective vertical reach of up to 9.5 meters and fits tunnels measuring 4 meters wide and 2.4 meters high. It is available with the latest Volvo Penta’s Stage V technology or, alternatively, with a Stage IIIA emission- rated engine, both producing 185 kW of power and allowing for excellent performance in incline driving along with upgraded retardation features with an automatic engine brake function The mission to improve the scaling process does not end here. The SmartDrive version of the Scamec LC Thor with zero local emissions and further advancements in safety and operator wellbeing on its way. ●
