The 2026 edition of the Nuclear Engineering International World Nuclear Industry Handbook offers a directory of companies, organisations and service providers working across the nuclear sector. It also includes a listing of operating reactors and units under construction.

During 2024 the world’s nuclear reactors produced a total of 2667 TWh, according to World Nuclear Association figures. This is not only a substantial increase of 66 TWh on the 2601 TWh generated in 2023 but is recorded as the highest annual generation ever delivered by nuclear power. The previous record of 2660 TWh was set nearly 20 years ago in 2006. This impressive figure came in part from the recovery of much of the French reactor fleet, which had been offline while the stress corrosion cracking issue – that affected numerous reactors – was addressed. However, generation also increased in Asia, where five new reactors were connected to the grid in 2024. Newly commissioned units brought the total worldwide capacity of operable nuclear power plants to 398 GWe, up 6 GWe on the 392 GWe seen at the end of the previous year. The total number of operable nuclear reactors was 440, a net increase of three units from the previous year. Although seven reactors were commissioned, including three in China and one in France, India, the United Arab Emirates and the USA, respectively, four reactors were also shut down. These units are Kursk 1 unit 2 in Russia, Pickering units 1 and 4 in Canada, and Maanshan unit 2 in Taiwan. Each of these reactors had been operating for at least 40 years.
