The 2023 edition of the Nuclear Engineering International World Nuclear Industry Handbook offers a directory of companies, organisations and service providers working across the nuclear sector. It also includes a listing of operating reactors and units under construction.

Despite the closure of three of the last reactors in Germany, technical problems in much of the French fleet and the conflict in Ukraine that saw units shut down, nuclear still delivered more that 2,500 TWh during 2022. Several reactors were also shut down in the UK and one each in the USA and Belgium. According to the World Nucleat Association (WNA) there are currently 437 operating reactors producing electricity with a collective capacity of more 394 GWe. This is up 5 GWe on 2021 with one more reactor in total.

During the year 2022 six new reactors were connected to the grid, led by Asia which added two in China, one in South Korea and another in Pakistan. A further five reactors also started construction in China, which continues its remarkable success in nuclear development. The Middle East also made progress, with a new reactor, Barakah unit 3, coming on-line in the United Arab Emirates and construction starts on two reactors in Egypt and one in Turkiye. In Europe, Finland’s Olkiluoto 3 was also commissioned in 2022. In total, there are 58 reactors currently under construction worldwide.
