NEW BUILD THE EMIRATES NUCLEAR Energy Corporation has completed hot functional testing (HFT) at unit 4 of the Barakah NPP under construction in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

UNIT 3 OF India’s Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) in Gujarat is expected to begin commercial operation by December after obtaining staged regulatory clearances, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha (parliament).

ALL REACTOR PLANT equipment has been installed at unit 3 of India’s Kudankulam NPP using the open top method. The first time this technique was used at Kudankulam was to install the unit 3 reactor vessel. Installation of steam generators, main circulation pumps, main circulation pipelines and pressure compensator have now been completed.

KAZAKHSTAN’S DEPUTY ENERGY Minister Zhandos Nurmaganbetov told a meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Electric Power Council that the Ministry of Energy of expects the share of its future NPP in electricity generation will be 12% by 2035.

THE BN-1200 fast neutron reactor planned for unit 5 of Russia’s Beloyarsk NPP will be equipped with new safety equipment, in particular with thermal protection rods, Ivan Sidorov, director of the Beloyarsk NPP, said. A decision to start construction of the BN-1200M is expected later this year.

THE BUILDERS OF the Pilot Demonstration Energy Complex) at the Siberian Chemical Combine (SCC), part of Rosatom’s fuel company TVEL, will begin installation of the base of the Brest-300 reactor in September, SCC general director Sergey Kotove said. The reactor base will be delivered from St Petersburg through the Baltic along the Northern Sea Route.

IRAN HAS BEGUN work on a domestic NPP with a capacity of 360 MWe, according to the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation (AEOI), Deputy President Mohammad Eslami. “This year we started another project to build a completely Iranian nuclear power plant with a capacity of 360 MWe,” he said.

CONCRETING OF THE dome of the inner containment has been completed at unit 1 of the Rooppur NPP under construction in Bangladesh. In total, more than 3200 m3

concrete were laid on the structure with a height of 17.6 metres and a base diameter of 42.8 metres.

El-Dabaa and Akkuyu First concrete for In a related development, first concrete was

also recently poured for unit 4 at the Akkuyu NPPP under construction in Turkey. The move marks the start of construction of Russian- supplied VVER-1200 reactor. Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez said

Akkuyu NPP is Turkey’s largest ever single investment, adding that, with all four units in operation the plant will provide up to 10% of Turkey’s total energy consumption. “Construction and installation work at the

facilities of the plant’s physical protection system is proceeding as planned. We plan to complete the first stage in November 2022. This will ensure readiness for the most important stage – the delivery of fresh nuclear fuel for unit 1 of the station in May 2023,” said Likhachev. The construction licence for unit 4 was issued

First concrete has been poured for unit 1 of the El-Dabaa NPP in Egypt, signalling the formal start of construction. The Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) had issued the construction permit for unit 1 ahead of schedule in June. El-Dabaa NPP, Egypt’s first NPP, will be

of

constructed in the city of El-Dabaa in Matrouh Governorate on the Mediterranean coast, some 300km north-west of Cairo. The plant will comprise four units with generation III+ VVER-1200 pressurised water reactors. The NPP is being constructed by Rosatom in accordance with contracts that entered into force in December 2017 based on an inter-governmental agreement signed by Egypt and Russia in 2015. The contracts specify that Russia will also supply nuclear fuel throughout the lifecycle of the plant, arrange for the training of the Egyptian personnel, and assist in the operation and maintenance of the plant for the first 10 years. The cost of the project is $30bn, 85% of which is financed through a $25bn Russian loan. Under another agreement, Rosatom will build a special storage facility and deliver casks for storing used nuclear fuel. “The construction launch at the El-Dabaa NPP unit 1 means that Egypt has joined the nuclear club,” said Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom. Dr Shaker, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and

Renewable Energy, stated: “The commencement of full-scale construction of unit 1 is a historic event for Egypt.” He also noted that the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic did not have a negative impact on the Project.

by the Turkish Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NDK) in October 2021. Concreting was preceded by a whole range of preparatory work: dewatering, excavation of a foundation pit, installation of a concrete cushion and waterproofing, reinforcement of the foundation and installation of embedded parts. In total 17,000 m3

unit. The concreting process will be carried out under supervision of the laboratory specialists of the concreting plant, representatives of project company Akkuyu Nuclear JSC, main construction contractor TITAN 2 IJ ICHTASH INSHAAT, and independent construction control organisations. Work is at different stages across all areas of

the site. At unit 1, concreting of the foundation slabs of the reactor compartment and turbine hall has been completed; a melt trap, the reactor pressure vessel, steam generators and main circulation pump casings have been installed; welding of the main circulation pipeline has been completed; five tiers of the inner containment (ICE) have been assembled; the 6th tier of the lower part of the dome is being assembled; and the polar crane is being pre-assembled. At unit 2, a melt trap has been installed; concreting has been completed on the foundation slabs of the reactor compartment and turbine hall; and three tiers of the inner containment have been assembled. At unit 3, the foundation of the turbine building and the reactor compartment has been concreted, and a melt trap installed. In 2010, Turkey and Russia signed an

intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the construction and operation the Akkuyu nuclear plant in Mersin province. Rosatom is building four VVER-1200 reactors at the site, under a build-own-operate model. Construction of the first unit began in 2018, with start-up planned for 2023. ■
