Hazardous waste management _the way forward: automation, skills and innovation
The need for zero-carbon sources of energy means that nuclear power must be a significant and sub- stantial part of the mix. It is the only non-carbon power source so far available that can provide high levels of reliable baseload.
The future of nuclear power will be based, proba- bly above all, on the success of decommissioning programmes across the world. If the industry can demonstrate that it can handle nuclear waste effectively, safely and at a manageable cost, then it is more likely to be entrusted with a greater share of the post-carbon energy landscape.
Robotics has a track record of supplying ro- bots and automated systems that can either be used in pretty much standard format in nuclear settings, or can be readily modified to work reliably and over long periods in hazardous environments. The Systems Competence Centre Halesowen is responsible for the design, build, manufacture and installation of robotic automation systems, includ- ing welding systems, into the nuclear sector.
