Fleet preview Safety:
The R5 E-Tech has four safety ADAS features from the Scenic E-Tech electric, but not before present within the B segment: automatic emergency braking in reverse, front sensors with emergency lane keep, rear sensors with emergency lane keep and rear occupant safe passenger exit. Helpfully, the potential cacophony of bleeps that could accompany such safety features can be controlled by a new feature. Called ‘My Safety Shield’ and located to the left of the steering wheel, one button press lets the driver activate or deactivate their preferred settings for five ADAS features at the same time. A ‘Safety Coach’ function can also assess driving style and suggest potential improvements.
Technology:
The twin 10in driver and central screens sit within the same frame, while the software has Google built in and showcases the first use of Renault’s diamond-shaped avatar ‘Reno’. “It helps you interact with the car,” says Vidal. “If for example, you say you are a bit warm, it can suggest opening the window nearest to where you are sitting, because it recognises where your voice is coming from.” For those not so keen on a
talking – and rather cheesily designed – ‘virtual digital assistant’, it can also (apparently) be turned off.
Equipment:
Two trims – Techno and Iconic Five – kick-off the R5’s launch in the UK with the bigger 52kWh battery. Standard on Techno will be 18in alloy wheels, 10in screens and Android Auto and Apple Car Play wireless compatibility. The Iconic Five trim adds heated seats and steering wheel and front and rear sensors. Personalisation is a big part of the new 5’s option list too, from exterior decals to different colour interior parts – the end of the gear selector is just one customisable example. There’s even an option of a wicker basket to clip on to the centre console, which can house some flowers or a suitably French baguette.
