Toyota features heavily in this issue. Our cover story (page 22) is a test drive of the Hilux GR Sport, the new flagship in the brand’s pick-up range. The Hilux is deservedly renowned for its toughness and off-road prowess but it has arguably lacked a genuine contender at the top end of the popular lifestyle sector; with the GR Sport that could be about to change. In our News section (pages 5 to 8), we report on Toyota’s development of a prototype hydrogen-powered Hilux at its facility in
Burnaston, Derbyshire. It is likely to be a long time before it goes into production, but fuel cell could offer a sustainable solution for heavy-duty LCVs that need to cover longer distances than a BEV could manage. Hydrogen is just one topic touched upon in a fascinating interview with Heinz-Jürgen Löw, Renault’s senior vice-president of
LCVs, in our IVOTY Report (page 12). Returning to a subject we first covered in What Van? October 2022, after we met Low at the IAA in Hanover, he hits out at the European Commission’s delayed introduction of the Euro 7 regulation for ICE vehicles and the strain it is putting on manufacturers’ resources at a time when, he says, they would be better spent on developing carbon neutral technologies. He could have a point!
