THE 10 MOST
A340 CABIN OVERHAUL FOR SWISS
1
THE AIRBUS A340 is something of a rarity among airlines these days, the gas- guzzling aircraft having largely fallen out of favour compared with newer, more fuel-eff icient planes. However, some airlines do still operate the long-haul aircraft and those travelling with Swiss can expect to see new first and business class seat products on the airline’s A340s. The first class seats have a distinctly off ice-style look to them, while the fully flat business class seats have been designed to align with those on the airline’s Boeing 777s. Passengers flying to Tokyo can already experience the new seats, while those flying to Shanghai can expect to see them by this summer.

WHO needs a car service when your airline will book you a helicopter to connect with your fl ight? American Airlines plans to do just that with its Five Star Service offered in Los Angeles and New York set to include the option of private helicopter transfers to the airport. “Customers will be picked up in the city at a destination of their choice and flown to LAX or JFK where they’ll be greeted by an American Airlines team member and escorted via Cadillac to Flagship First Check-In,” the airline says. “After clearing security, customers can spend their extra time relaxing or working in the Admirals Club, Flagship Lounge or Flagship First Dining before their fl ight.” Helicopter transfers, provided by Blade, will be available to arriving travellers as well.

CYCLING TO work is making a big comeback, particularly in busy cities like London where traff ic is often slow and taxi fares high. There’s also the British capital’s controversial congestion charge to consider if you’re thinking about renting a car yourself. But for all of the humble bicycle’s resurgent popularity, there is one historical variant that has yet to make a comeback – until now.

Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel in London’s Belgravia is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria with a new £165 (US$217) Penny Farthing and Picnic package that allows guests to try their hand at riding the – let’s face it, comically huge – penny-farthing bicycle. To be fair, the hotel isn’t suggesting guests use it as their preferred mode of transport for work, rather that they learn to ride it on a trip with cycling experts to Buckingham Palace, after which they can enjoy a nice picnic out on the lawns of nearby Hyde Park.
