WELCOME TO the latest issue of Pen&inc. and we are excited to bring you more great interviews from the creative forces behind some of the best inclusive and representa- tive books out there.
As always, this Autumn/Winter issue of Pen&inc. has hundreds of new books to suit every taste and inspire children of all ages to get reading. And that doesn’t always have to mean reading in the traditional sense, as our first interview with Aaron Becker highlights.
Aaron is the author and illustrator behind The Tree and The River, the winner of this year’s Yoto Carnegie Medal and the Shadowers’ Choice award for illustration. A self-confessed “reluctant reader”, Aaron uses images to build a wordless narrative that allows the reader to build their own stories.
Hiba Noor Khan was shortlisted for the Yoto Carnegie Medal for writers, for Safiyyah’s War, a story of daring and danger in World War Two that has been hidden from view for decades. Hiba’s desire to uncover these hidden truths is helping to put right some of history’s injustices and helps to dispel some of the “established truths” that don’t always reflect reality.
A final Carnegies connection comes from this year’s host, Manjeet Mann and her tribute to librarians and the impact they have.
September is World Kid Lit Month, giving teachers the perfect opportunity to explore cultures and countries around the world through fiction. Organiser Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp has some great examples to get you started. We also hear from Eva Wong Nava about a new festival that is giving a platform to talent from East and South East Asian countries.
Theo Parish discusses what it means to find your place in the world. We also hear from Anne Fine, author of Madame Doubtfire, about her new novel On The Wall.
And while Safiyyah’s War looks at events from a past war, our cover story is the story of the opening days of the current conflict taking place in Ukraine. We speak to both the author and illustrator about Silent Night, My Astronaut and capturing the effects of war through the eyes of a child.
Don’t forget, you can help support our work and receive a print edition of our next edition by taking out a subscription for your school or library. You can find out more and read back issues of Pen&inc. at

As always, we hope you enjoy this issue of Pen&inc. and look forward to our next issue, which will be out in the Summer of next year.
