Fantastic worlds, amazing stories!

Rob Green Editor rob.green@cilip.org.uk

WELCOME TO our Autumn Winter issue of Pen&inc. It is not long since we last published, having taken the decision to delay our Spring Summer issue so that book shops could re-open following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions that impacted across the publishing sector.

Fortunately publishers have managed to keep the production cycle turning during what has been a difficult time, and once again we have been able to include hundreds of recent, new and upcoming titles in our listings.

As ever with Pen&inc. our aim is to celebrate and shine a light on the good things that are happening in children’s publishing to make it more inclusive and representative. There is still a long, long way to go but every book, every creator, every publisher and every book- seller that cares about inclusivity is helping to improve the landscape.

And this issue is a real celebration of talent, as we talk to authors and illustrators about their work and inspiration. It is always inspiring to learn about different experiences and journeys, and we are delighted that so many great creators chose to share their stories with Pen&inc. – we hope you enjoy them too.

We also have two awards announcements in this issue – the shortlists from the inaugural Diverse Book Awards, and the winners of the CILIP Carnegie Kate Greenaway Shadowers’ Choice Awards. Both of these awards feature young people as judges and give a real insight into what children and young people enjoy reading – we won’t ruin the surprise here, but you can find out more inside.

And of course, children and young people are the real beneficiaries of a more diverse, inclu- sive and representative book industry. Whether it is being inspired by a creative voice who shares your experience and seeing characters that look like you, or whether it is seeing a new culture or someone else’s perspective for the first time – it all helps to enrich children’s lives.

Time and time again studies show the importance of reading for pleasure for children. It not only help to improve school attainment levels, it also improves self-esteem, builds empathy and helps to deliver social cohesion. It has also been shown to a be a powerful driver in improving outcomes in later life. It is no exaggeration to say that reading for pleasure can change lives.
