The demand for ‘machine- readable’ standards is growing as artificial intelligence and the internet of things are incorporated into manufacturing and administrative processes. How is BSI responding to this latest challenge?
T
he blurring of lines between the digital and the physical that characterizes the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry
4.0) will have a profound effect on the way BSI delivers its standards to customers. As artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT) lead businesses to become more connected, the demand for standards that can be read by machines is set to grow. “Many standards are likely to become used or interpreted by machines in an increasing number of ways as the IoT drives the demand for interoperability,” said Ivan Salcedo, Principal, Knowledge Innovation, Product Management. Simply put, interoperability means different
software systems being able to ‘speak’ to each other as elements in an automated process.
Reducing human intervention reduces the potential for error, leading to reduced risk and costs, alongside improved quality. This is forcing BSI to take a fresh look
at how it develops and delivers standards and how they might be made machine- interpretable. In short, how BSI might produce ‘smart’ standards. As is normal at the start of any standards- making process, there are more questions than answers. “It’s difficult to have a common set of procedures and rules when there are such a huge number of variables,” said Ivan. “To achieve consistency, we need to define
machine readability. What kind of machine, what software format? Will it be stable enough for the lifetime of the standard? Who knows how to author it, read it, or contribute directly to its development? Does it require continuous monitoring as opposed to the traditional periodic review?” There are also many internal challenges
for BSI. It would mean changing systems designed for issuing documents to one which could cope with new formats, requiring a software publishing capability. This in turn would require BSI’s people to gain new skills and knowledge.
