There is plenty of green and open space in the city itself, so it rarely feels crowded. The compact city centre is easily walkable, and active travel route suggestions help you fi nd your way around, taking in heritage sites and beauty spots. With so much green space there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, such as walking, cycling and water sports.

Exeter has a rich cultural history, and a strong identity as a small city with lots of character. Historic buildings sit alongside cutting-edge shops, restaurants, and arts venues, and it is renowned in the south west for its independent arts scene. The city’s museums and galleries off er a vibrant programme of exhibitions, performance, fi lm and visual art. In 2020 the city was awarded UNESCO City of Literature status, recognising 1,000 years of unbroken history around reading, including the 10th century Exeter Book, perhaps Exeter’s greatest treasure housed at Exeter Cathedral.
