at the Fair Hill International 4* Bid Open House February 15 • Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area, Elkton
John Ryan (FHI board member & site de- velopment chairman) and Trish Gilbert (FHI board of directors co-president) stated that fi rst the USEF must decide between Fair Hill and Great Meadows as a 4* location bid before the FEI votes for fi nal approval. A decision should be made by the end of the summer. Once this decision is made, then the changes to the current FHI Festival in the Coun- try and CCI 2* and CCI3* events will be discussed.
FHI executive director Carla Geiersbach and Terry Hassel- tine of the Maryland Stadium Authority explained which facil- ity improvements (including the turf track, additional rings and grandstand renovations) would take place even if FHI does not host a 4* event.
Several groups associated with Fair Hill International’s bid for a CCI 4* event came together on February 15 for an open house to answer questions from the general public. Above is a rendering of what the improvements to the race course would look like including removeable grandstands, expanded sta- bling and renovations to the current grandstands, stables and other outbuildings.
Nancy Simpers and Nancy Dougherty represented the National Steeplechase Association (which has its offi ce at Fair Hill) and the Fair Hill Races and Point- to-Points. Improvements to the race course include installing a new irrigation system to improve the turf footing.
The nearby University of Dela- ware has partnered with FHI to provide spring and fall interns. Pictured here are Kasey Moyer, a senior studying Animal/Food Sci- ence and Agriculture and Natural Resources, with Amy Biddle, as- sistant professor at UDel for the Animal/Food Science division and equine science professor.
The FHI facility falls under the Department of Natural Re- sources and is maintained by DNR. Pictured are Ranger Steve McCoy (Central Region Regional Manager), Lt. Col. Christo- pher C. Bushman (Maryland Park Service Deputy Superinten- dent), Mary R. Owens, AICP (MPS Director of Planning and Conservation Programs) and Christopher Grieco (FHNRMA Assistant Park Manager)
Don Moore (Cecil County Fair vice presi- dent) and Al Miller (Cecil County Fair president) talked about how additional rings and facility upgrades will help the fair and other activities that take place at Fair Hill.
