Marylanders’ Big Wins in 2018, continued...

The Hurdy Gurdy At the end of the 2018

Maryland Steeplechase Association Gover- nor’s Cup Series, Erin Swope and Sweet Talk- ing Guy were honored as the association’s fi rst female Hurdy Gurdy winner. T is award is specifi cally designed to recognize a horse and rider pair that embod- ies the spirit of fox- hunter Kingdon Gould, Jr., and his timber horse Hurdy Gurdy. Erin started foxhunting when she was only fi ve years old and ran in her fi rst pony race in 2009 when she was 10. “It was at Howard County with my pony Blueberry Muffi n. After him I had this great pony named Jordan that I raced a lot with and also hunted,” Erin said. As Erin was looking to move on from ponies to horses, her parents found Sweet Talking Guy, a 2008 gelding with only eight starts on the fl at. “I think he came in last or near the end every time but he had a great quiet temperament which was perfect for me,” Erin explained. Sweet Talking Guy turned out to really be the perfect partner for Erin as the two started in the hunt fi eld and then moved onto Junior Field Master Chases. As a whipper-in with Carrollton Hounds, Erin says he is a great hunt horse and her father Ben Swope also uses him as his huntsman’s horse from time to time. Ben also races and father and daughter even went head to head one race several years ago. “If it wasn’t for my Dad, I wouldn’t be able to race at all,” Erin explained. “My parents are both super supportive of my racing and they are the ones that have gotten me horses to ride.” Together, Erin and Sweet Talking Guy have moved up the ranks of steeplechasing from junior races, to amateur fl at, hurdles and now timber. “I hope to run him in more sanctioned races this year to work with some tougher competition,” she said, adding, “and I’d really like to start to ride for more trainers too.” Erin is already breezing horses for Mary Eppler at Pimlico while working on a business degree at Towson University.
