at Donna and Garon Stutzman’s Grove Creek Mule Farm on the East- ern Shore in order to rest and prepare for their appearance on July 4th in the 2017 National In- dependence Day Parade in Washington, DC. In the 1880s, the ful-

ly-loaded Borax wagons would haul 36.5 tons from Death Valley ap- proximately 165 miles to the railhead in Mojave, CA: 10 days, 20 mules and 2 men. T e resurrection of the 20-

Mule Team is a true coast-to- coast alliance, made possible by Marylanders Garon & Donna Stutzman and Californian Bob- by Tanner. A renowned California mule

skinner, Tanner and his fam- ily have owned Red’s Meadow Resort & Pack Station in Mam- moth Lakes for about 50 years. Recreating the Borax 20-Mule hitch had been just a long-time

Garon and his wife Donna own and operate Grove Creek Mules, a training farm in Cent- reville, where they have just launched their own mule breeding pro- gram using Hanoverian mares and their two jacks (stallion donkeys) Clyde’s Gallant Fox and Braymore’s Condor. Eventually, together,

Tanner had new wagons built to the same specs as the original wagons, and use the exact same materials as the original, but was stumped on where to fi nd the nec- essary white oak to build the hubs. Handily, a storm wiped out a grove of white oaks at the Stutzman’s new farm, and voilà – new hubs!

the Stutzmans and Tanners were able to raise the $300,000 nec- essary to build authen- tic recreations of the original Borax wagons and get them to the East Coast to parade in Washington, D.C. While in Maryland, the team of 20 mules, 3 horses and a dozen or so mule skinners made something of a celebrity appearance on Sunday, July 2 to hundreds of appreciative fans at the

Hilltop Farm to Host Stallion Per- formance Tests

T e stallion performance tests put on by the

North American Sport Breeders Association were traditionally held in a central location over a period of 30, 70 or even 100 days. In more recent years, fi nding a minimum of 15 U.S. stallions for the bell type scoring required became diffi cult and testing went from an an- nual event to a semi-annual one. For the fi rst time here in the U.S., a 3-day

“short” test will be off ered on each coast. Hill- top Farm in Colora, MD, will host the East Coast testing on October 31-November 2, while Pollyrich Farms in Solvang, CA, will host the West Coast test November 3-5. T e same set of judges and test riders from Germany will be at both locations. T is past January, Hilltop Farm general man- ager Natalie DiBerardinis attended a similar testing in Germany along with Hilltop’s head trainer Michael Bragdell and Meg Williams, head of mares/stallions for the American Ha- noverian Society. DiBerardinis explained, “in Europe, a stallion is licensed at two years old, then completes a 14-day test as a three year old for a one year breeding license. After that, they
