MUSEUMS 2024 THE GUIDE

According to France’s Ministry of Culture, there are more than 1,220 offi cially recognised museums and galleries dotted around France and its overseas departments and territories. The Louvre, in Paris, is the biggest, best known and most popular, with more than nine million visitors a year. But there’s plenty of fun to be had at lesser-known, quirkier venues, too, with collections designed to interest all tastes and ages. The ministry explains how the various collections cover all human

history – from cave paintings of our prehistoric ancestors to the most modern scientifi c technology – and all areas of the planet. They

celebrate both national and international history: the storming of the Bastille, Napoleon’s coronation, World War II Resistance and the American War of Independence, for example. But they also cover daily life in France – school, medicine,

religion, clothing, the environment – as well as industries such as shipping, agriculture, oenology, mining, crafts… “And don’t forget the musicians, writers, fashion designers, political personalities or inventors,” the Ministry adds. It’s all there to be discovered. Our guide will help you choose the most intriguing museums and galleries of all.
